SVT prices at recent auction

Seems like there's a few sitting on the EE right now for decent prices- mr83g0n3 and m1thumb both have nice looking SVT's listed for $600ish. Wonder why auction prices are so much higher...

I've been to a lot of auctions. Sometimes people just get into a bidding frenzy and drive the prices up in the excitement.

I sold mine a while back and can not believe the prices of what they go for / people ask for them. At the end of the days they’re only worth what someone is willing to pay. The EE and repetitive bumps would support that

Yes, auction prices are often somewhat inflated as to what real market value is. As already mentioned, you get 2 guys trying to out bid each other and there ya go!. There is an auction house not too far from me that has 2 gun auctions a year. I quit going because it got to be that with pretty much of the majority of guns, the selling prices were way more than the guns were worth given condition. When you figure a packed house, absentee bids, online bids and telephone bids while the auction is taking place, you can pretty much forget about reasonable prices in most cases.

I have had the same experience. I don't go out of my way to go to gun auctions any more. The occasional one I do go to the only things going for reasonable money are junkers, there is the odd gem sitting on the junk pile but you need to know what to look for, and the boxes of miscellaneous and reloading tools. But then how many $20 RCBS presses can one man use :)

SVTs are not done appreciating. A semi-automatic rifle, that saw limited production, from a war that started 80 years ago? Be happy you can still get them under a grand.

Auction prices are higher, because some people just WANT TO WIN THE BID, regardless the value.

While these 11 sold for higher prices than seem to be common on the EE (and in my experience selling face to face at shows) I have noticed commercial sellers have sold numbers of SVT 40's at even higher prices. I'm not sure I understand the disconnect but it sure makes it tough to decide what "market value" should be.

Good to know. I've been toying with the idea of getting a SVT-40 for some time. Might finally pull the trigger on it soon.

You should do that. In couple of months under 750 CAD you will never see one. And very soon 1000 it will be the mark.

I purchased mine privately for 300.00 a couple years back, what a wickedly cool rifle!! Mine had it's stock painted a nasty flesh tone colour.. It has since been sanded and BLOed!

I actually bought one of the SVT 40s at that auction and while I paid a bit more than I wanted to I am happy with it. These rifles do keep going up in price and are a great piece of history. The one I got is one of the nicest shooting rifles Ive ever got behind. Same with all milsurps though, get them while you can
