SVT Problem

I purchased an SVT 40 last year and when I took it to the range at that time, I fired one shot and the case would not extract. The steel case expanded and stuck in the chamber. After returning home I beat it out and at the time I thought I must not have had the round fully inserted into the chamber. I had it out today for the first time since then and only fired 6 shots. Every time the case got stuck and would have to be beat out. Very hard on the extractor. Anyone encounter this problem? I am probably stuck with a POS.

Consensus is to check that your gas is set to a setting and not in between. If it is lined up at a setting turn it up one setting and try it again. Also make sure the chamber is really clean. I think it's just part of the SVT learning curve.

Did you thoroughly strip and clean the rifle since you have bought it?

Get a decent bore brush and go too town on the chamber make sure it's is free of debris, Cosmo.

Also what type of ammo surplus or factory? And copper washed or laquar?

If you have to beat it out anyway, check the case for lengthwise scratches. I was at the range on Thursday playing with mine, and another fellow a few benches down was having the same problem no matter what he set his gas to. He asked me what I was doing different and it turned out pretty much nothing.

We plucked one of his spent cases and it had very visible lengthwise scratches. I "happened to have" a penlight on me (because I keep one in my range bag) and we removed the receiver cover/bolt/carrier and took a look inside. His chamber was horribly pitted, I would say beyond any hope of re-polishing. His was a "Wholesale Sports Special" - no one had even given it a passing glance pulling it out of the crate.

It happens. Sometimes the arsenals didn't do much in the way of refurb - just a basic clean and dunk in cosmo before packing them away.

For a decent chamber brush, I find a 12guage bore brush works well. Clean it, scrub it down, take a look.

If the chamber is fine, then yah - it's the gas setting. If I set mine too low or turn it off, then it's out with the rubber mallet to beat the charging handle to extract.

Thanks for the replies guys. I am using copper washed and there are no lengthwise scratches on cases. Since first acquiring and 2 trips to the range, I likely have 3 hours of stripping and cleaning time and I did use a 12 gauge brush to clean the chamber. Chamber is very smooth. Therefore, I will try adjusting the gas setting as suggested.
