Hello,

I am looking at buying an SVT-40, and have been to many of the sites that still have them in stock. I am just curious if you guys can speak for any of these retailers on the quality of their surplus. I have been strongly considering an SVT from frontier firearms as they have a fixed 15$ shipping. Shipping price is kind of a big deal as well, because its got to be shipped way up here to northern Ontario. Any input would be great guys, and if this has been covered, I apologize, I will admit, I didnt look all that hard for a similar thread.

Thanks,

Jeremy

They are great rifles but with all surplus the condition is luck of the draw. Most surplus dealers are fair when it comes to assessing surplus so I would not hesitate to purchase one from a reputable dealer. Most SVT rifles saw combat and used corrosive ammo so the bores are all fair to good. I have never seen one with an "excellent bore". Hope that helps.

I appreciate the feedback, I figured most places wouldnt want to to hurt their reputation selling crap. Now comes to challenge to find decent shipping!

Thanks!

Look at the quality and shipping for sure and from a reputable dealer, however look at total price, as in shipping $10 flat rate but rifle $350 whereas anothe might charge $25 for shipping but rifle is $300!! Also look at dealers out west as BC and I believe Alberta do not charge other provinces tax so you save ( for me 10%) that is a bunch overall. For instance, I just bought 3 NS522 rifles from Canam out in BC and they were $199 each total $597. So delivered (free) it was total $627 taxes in! Shop around!

Looks like I can get one from lever arms, $391 all in, but marstar has them for 299, but still waiting on shipping costs as their website doesnt estimate it, unless I am doing it wrong haha.

If you're in Thunder Bay check out GMK armoury. That's where I got mine from, no shipping needed. Plus you can examine it in person. When I was there there was a crate full and I picked out the one I wanted. Total (taxes included) $337.

It was april when I was there, so no gaurantees, but you never know! They also have pretty good prices on surplus 7.62x54R. Might even give you a bit of a combo deal if you ask.

I have two SVT. A 1940 with a good bore and a 1941 with a heavily pitted bore. The 1940 will rotate a cleaning bush being pushed down the barrel. The 1941 won't. Both have been shimmed so the barrel band fits tight. Both shoot the same 3" best 5" worst 5 shot groups at 100 meters. My 1940 has claimed a very lucky 1 1/4" group once. Has never done it again.

Even if the bore is in terrible shape, I believe these rifles will still shoot really well. My 1941 is so heavily used that gas setting 1.3 hole is larger than 1.7.

luck of the draw it seems. I got 3 from lever arms with their 200$ christmas sale last year. Got a beautiful 1940 with a perfect bore and perfect early thin stock with no repairs.
If you can hand pick do it!

I have bought allot of surplus guns at Wholesale sports with no issues. Wholesale carry SVT in store for 339? I looked at there demo model, Looked great and its easy to return stuff there if you go into the store. I have had no pitting so for with there sks's And the quality is great. I regret buying some of the stuff I have online, Lots of nasty fowling #### in the barrels. I will only buy instore now where If there is a problem I can go and talk to someone and get some good help.

Generally it is a pretty safe bet to buy Mosin Nagants and SKSs sight unseen. It is less so for SVTs. As others have said, these saw extensive service and many are quite badly worn. I have several but I wouldn't buy any more unless I can look them over carefully. If you can't physically inspect them, choose a reputable dealer even it is a few extra dollars.

I just picked up a SVt-40 from P.S militia sight unseen... Hopefully its not a total P.O.S. But that's the luck of the draw when buying online....

I have never been disappointed buying from them. Everything I have bought there was underrated (i.e. being labeled V.G. when most people would consider it EXC.). I ended up getting my SVT-40 there two or three years ago before they came in large quantities (they were selling for 400+ then) and I haven't been disappointed with that decision yet.

I considered buying from P.S Militia as well, and still am considering it, but I was disappointed when I found out they dont do credit card. Its kind of a pain to get to the bank for a money order with a busy schedule, though I may have to make the exception given the reputation. I am hoping to check my local gun store tomorrow, hoping to walk out with what im looking for. I appreciate all of the feedback on this matter, thanks.

I did buy my SVT40 from Frontier and got a great service and a great rifle! I also called them and talked to one of the guys and he was able to give me a good description on what he had in stock and I made my choice based on that. They also had a deal back then on a crate of ammo shipped at no charge at a reduced price if purchased together with a rifle.
I am very happy with the transaction and will deal with this guys again.
Hope it helps.

PS is a little strange on the payment front but they know exactly what they are selling. If they say "good", it means good (not most of the ones I looked at were good). You pay a little more and its more trouble, but when you want something specific, they are the place to go.
