In my earlier post about the svt handguard I received some great responses to my questions about my new old svt. Having solved the loose receiver issue with some beer can shims and the trigger assembly re-assembly difficulties with a clamp i have a few more questions that i hope some knowledgeable nut can help me with - and this time i brought some pics :)

1) after cleaning the bolt carrier operation is nice and smooth with the rifle cocked but the cocking operation is anything but smooth and actually requires some force to rack the slide. Is this normal and is there any polishing i can do to make this smoother??

2) I notice there is some play in the bolt carrier side to side such that when i slowly close the action the carrier doesnt fully close on the mouth of the chamber. At first i thought it looked like friction between the extractor and the lips on the chamber but it looks like its actually the other side of the carrier that makes slight contact. Using a small force or the spring action closes the action properly.

3) The handguard is a little loose. If i push it forward fully there is a small 1/8 " gap between the steel guard and the stock. See picture. Any suggestions?

4) unfortunately my hand guard is cracked about 1 inch on both ends. What are the chances of this propagating?? Also, my stock is cracked at the butt end. See picture. Any risks? What can i do to fix this??

-Its perfectly normal to feel resistance while cocking the hammer, no worries there.

-The play in the carrier is normal, the SVT action, like others semi auto, is not designed to be closed gently, must let go foward on its own.

-For the handguard, if that really bother you, take a bit of epoxy to buit up the handguard at the front. The idea is to get the handguard making contact on the rear sight then the epoxy at the front end tip will prevent mouvement when the sheet metal handguard is installed.

-srews have been installed on the handguard to prevent further cracking, also on your stock at the wrist area. This is common method to fix cracked stock. You should be fine.

Thx svt1940 - that makes me feel better.

I havent played around with other svts so i have no way to compare.

My intentions are to shoot it so i dont care that much that the cracks are there from an aesthetic pov but i just dont want it to crack more while firing.

I actually thought the pins are part of the original design hehe:HR:

Well the handguard pins were always there to reinforce handguard but the cross bolt at the wrist was put there during refurb to prevent further cracking of the stock. Hope you will like your rifle:)
