Last year I purchased an SVT-40 (Tula 1942) and while its a real fun gun to shoot I'd really like to get it scoped especially with the new picatinny mount Corwin Arms sells, unfortunately being a 1942 means it lacks the milled grooves on the side of the receiver. Given the price I paid I'm not concerned with preserving the rifle in original condition and thought about taking it to a gunsmith to mill but I can't find a single shred of information on the rail grooves' location, width or depth online. Does anyone know where I might find this info or if it's possible to extrapolate it based on the rail mount itself?

Best bet is to find someone who has a SVT with the grooves, and measure them yourself. That way you know for sure what the dimensions are. You could also try posting in the Red Rifle Forum, after making a Welcome post in the Greeting and Introduction Section. What area of the Country are you in? Maybe someone can help you out.
Just resell your rifle and buy one with the grooves...lots of SVT's around.

You may not be worried about the value of your rifle now, but you will be in 5-10 years after the supply of them has dried up, the value of them has tripled, but yours isn't even worth what you paid for it because you Bubba'ed the receiver.

Actually (experts please chime in) isn't the SVT without the receiver grooves less common than ones with the grooves?
Nein.
Receiver grooved SVT's were only made for a little over a year. Without the groove is far more common, based on production numbers alone.
Now, in Canada, that might be different. The importers (as far as I can tell) take a preference on importing ones with the grooves, so they might be a bit more common in Canada. But they also tend to go for a $20-$40 premium at a lot of the dealers.
