All of the mounts I've seen use the grooves.

Some Americans have bought an extra top cover and grafted a Weaver base on to it. How well that works is a good question.

Scoping those rifles is hard and not entirely successful even when the grooves are present.

Even with the grooves, you need the additional slot on the back in order to fit the original scope. Th eoriginal scope also has no magnification, so it's basically just for show.

I recommend a POSP scope, "teapot2" here on CGN is selling mounts and scopes for that, you need a low profile mount in order to work for the SVT40.

If you do not mind drilling and tapping and being branded a Bubba by some people in these forums, maybe a SKS Choate mount may work for the SVT40. Or the Weaver ConvertA mount will work. The following link shows the setup on a SKS.

SVT-40 Redneck Scope mount

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

My SVT-40 didn't have the scope rails machined into it, and since I'm old enough to be a curio and relic, I needed something I could see the target with!
I didn't want to permanently alter the rifle, so I used an old pitted dust cover, and a Weaver mount/rings I had laying around. The scope is a Kalinka with the crosshairs like my avatar. I've only shot it at 50yrds, but it's dead on, and it holds zero!

The receiver on the SVT40 doesn't have much room for mounting a scope mount, so I doubt this one would work.
