SW 617 opinions

I've got a couple of 617s. My most accurate .22LRs! I prefer the 6" barrel over all the others. Balances better and for me points better. I like the older models better with the 6 round steel cylinders, not the 10 rounders. The factory triggers are a little heavy and can use some work on them by a competent smith, but are quite useable as is for plinking, informal target practice. You can't go wrong with a 617!

gorky has a 6 shot 8 3/8" barrelled one in the exchange forums right now for 600 bucks. Really tempted but no job, no money. Otherwise, new, Lever Arms is showing a 10 shot 6" one for 1015.00

Make no mistake: for a 22lr, these are big revolvers. IIRC, the model I have for sale was, at one point, the heaviest Smith revolver you could buy due to the amount of metal still in the cylinder (22LR a bit smaller than a 44mag.... ;-) ). However, for target shooting, this extra weight was helpful for me to stay on target (less movement in the gun). As for balance, there is definately more weight in the front of the gun (due to the long barrel) but the gun is by no means unbalanced. I think I "measured" it before and the balance point for the gun was just behind the barrel (I would imagine around the forcing cone). Would have to check again to make sure.

I got a +90% six inch K-17 for $350 on gunnutz. they show up here between $325-450 here.

Yes they are an excellent training revolver, identical grips and trigger, and very similar balance to a K-19/66.

I have a 617 six shot with a 6" bbl. It is my most accurate revolver. Its a little heavy but managable.

The only changes I have made to this gun are a Wolfe spring kit & Pachmayer presentation grips.

This is one of the guns I will never sell.

Rod.

Geologist,

I have a 6" Model 17-7 which is a blued version of the 617. It is fantastic. The trigger is almost perfect in single action, just a little heavy in double, but that can be easily fixed.

I know which 4" 617 you are looking at and I was going to buy it but I didn't, and still don't have the money. It is a good deal.

I have a 617 - 4" bbl. An excellent shooter if you don't mind the weight. My wife likes shooting it too( she is 5'6" and 120 lbs), so the average male should not have a problem with this revolver. A Tip: Clean it well after each shoot.Good luck.
