SW model 10

A few years back I purchased here a 64-3 which is basically a Model 10 in stainless steel. Besides the six inch barrel it retains the smooth combat trigger and more subdued action hammer. Pretty slick.

This guy's asking price a bit too much. Lol

I thought I read some where that within the last century or so the Model 10 is the most prolific handgun on Planet Earth.

A model 10 with a 105mm or shorter barrel, which is the majority of them, is prohibited and would probably sell around the $250 mark.

But the example currently under discussion is one of the minority that has a barrel over 105mm, and can be owned by anybody who qualifies for a RPAL. If in good condition $700 is reasonable.

I smell a lowball offer thread coming up. LOL

Looks like you can still pick up a Model 66 (K-frame that can handle up to 357, Canada-legal barrel) for just over a grand brand new (Tenda). Granted that an older revolver is broken-in and has more history and charm and was built by more craftsmen and fewer lawyers and robots, but that does put a cap on what an older gun that can only take shorter rounds should be asking.

The box is a golden green color. Not in the best shape. There is no markings stating a M10. They said they phoned S&W and was told that it was previous to a M10. Gun is in decent shape. Hasn't been cleaned in a while. Filthy with powder residue.

Asking price is $1399. Which I think is way too much. I don't think I would pay much more than $450-500. I have enough restricted K frames as it is. (A few M19). But if someone is interested PM and I can pass the info.

A five (5”) S&W model 10 with the elongated *pencil* type barrel & fixed sights is a C$300.00 revolver.
Think perhaps the $1399.00 price tag is a clerical error & should read C$399.00. And even at $399.00 it’s still a stretch.

I’d gladly buy a model 10 in .38 special with 5” barrel for that price. Just point me in the right direction. That seems more in line with prohib prices.

For something restricted with fixed sights and 38special only, $400 is at the high end. I have regularly seen them for $350 or less. The tiny fixed rear sight is a dealbreaker for me. I picked up a mint model 15 (4” though for $250) with fully adjustable sights. I was going to convert it to a ppc gun but don’t have the heart. Restricted version would be 6ish tops.

While we've all got smokin' deals on 12(6) S&W prohib wheelguns from time to time, I still see lots for sale on the EE in the $400 + range.

When they eventually sell & for what is anyone's guess, though.

20 or 30 years ago, maybe.

I’ll I want are fixed sight revolvers. I’d prefer .357 but not many made, especially with barrels longer than 4”. Anytime I see one listed on the the EE they are asking a lot more than $350. 2x as much I’d say. Next time you see one for that price let me know and I’ll gladly buy it. The only revolver I’ve grabbed that was in that price range was a Colt Army Special in functional, yet quite worn condition.

I picked up 3 Model 10s off the CGN EE for $400 shipped, just three years ago. They all had four inch bbls and the fellow selling them owned a Security Company. All of them came with after market, rubber grips. They all had a bit of holster wear on the muzzles and cylinders.

Tradex, a banner supporter has some five inch NOS barrels, in the grease, wrapped in brown paper. They're cheap, but marked for the 38S&W. They do have .358 bores so they work fine for 38 special .358 bullets.

They do need to be indexed properly to seat the barrel against the frame, with the front sight in the 12 o'clock position and the face of the forcing cone needs to be trimmed for proper cylinder clearance. They look really nice and shoot really well and are eligible to be removed from the prohib class. Just waiting for this Covid thing to bring things back to normal and will get them reclassified.

I personally wouldn't pay more than $150 for a prohib Model 10.

By the way, I really like the model 10, especially when it's had a good trigger job done to it.

I have never seen a decent, workable S&W numbered model double action revolver sell that cheaply. I suppose if you hunt around long enough you will eventually stumble on some deals, but it is not market price.

I agree with you, no question.

However, they do come up, at my buy price, fairly regularly in the prohib category in my experience. Prohib, 12-6, revolvers and pistols are getting very difficult to move. If you add the cost of shipping, new bbl, gunsmith installation, pretty soon you've reached or exceeded the market value of the handgun. IMHO, it's only reasonable to purchase one IF you can do the work yourself.

I've bought and sold several, over the past 10 years for that price, to put new restricted length barrels on, for resale. Lot's of folks don't want to wait for six months or so for the extra money they may or may not get and just want them gone.

$150 is a fair price for a handgun that has a very marginalized and limited market.

You can barely sell a Model 10 in the US right now, but I believe that will change.

There were a couple nice deals on 12(6) model 10's on the EE in the past couple days.

Sadly, missed out on both. :(
