I recently purchased a used model 17. Within the first 50 rounds, I had a unknown squib, then fired again and it pushed the squib out.
The barrel has a barely noticeable bulge and a portion of rifling has been ringed. I have fired it since and to me the accuracy still seems acceptable.

This is the accuracy at 10-11 yards, off hand, using Remington golden bucket ammo.

I have a replacement barrel but I don't know if it makes sense to replace the barrel.
Does it make sense to replace the barrel, have the current barrel sleeved or have the barrel shortened to just behind the ringed portion?

Years ago when I was a member of the S.A.I.T rifle and pistol club, the club had several model 17's. One of them also had a buldged barrel from a squib some time in the past. It was consistently the most accurate one of the bunch.

Auggie D.

That will not bother the gun, if the crown is poor, or the last couple inches of rifling, than that is where things go haywire.

If it's shooting well just carry on. Put the spare barrel away for the day it doesn't group anymore. Or if it really bothers you get the new barrel installed. Having it is a great headstart. Then you can decide if you want to do something with the old one.

I've shot many .22s with a bulge and a few with multiple bulges. Nearly all were still usable to some degree. Many you would never know had any issue.
Most also weren't worth as much as a new barrel or liner would cost. Makes it a tough call on what to do sometimes.

I’m sorry but that target looks more like a target at 50 meters with a normal SW 17 and average shooter.
My 17-3 could group 3/4-1 inch at 15 meters. I traded it away because it had become boring to shoot.

Every one has there level of shooting, some days I can keep them in the x ring, other days all over the place.
What I find interesting I shoot a way tight group with my Model 19, or 14, than I can do with the M17, I use to do better with my Hi Standard target pistols, or Colt MT yrs ago, when I shot them more. And if we want to nit pick about some ones shooting, off a bag I have shot 3/8" groups. But that don't mean a damn thing, other to see if the gun is O.K.

If that's what your average target at 50m is like with a 17-3 I'm sure the coaches from the Canadian National team would like to talk to you.

Most silhouette shooters are quite capable of such targets at 50M. It's not uncommon at all. My own personal skills wouldn't be quite that good but they wouldn't be far off either.

I was talking standing and shooting with the pistol like most people, not laying down with it rested on your leg.

Why waste you time at only 10-11yds? At least 20yds single hand if you want to get better.
Practice as much double action as single action to really know the trigger.

Try another brand of ammo, Rem bucket isn't generally the most accurate in anyone's firearms - that stuff can make an Annie match rifle look so-so. If the accuracy at the same distance, using the same shooting method improves, then the barrel is responding normally, and all is well. That sounds a bit glib, but it's true.

It's not glib. That ammo is as cheap as it gets. I'm going to try my go-to ammo, CCI standard velocity. I will see if there's an increase in accuracy with SK and Eley.

Don't worry about it. Some people just suck at reading comprehension (while overestimating their shooting abilities).

I was talking freehand as well.

If you take a look at this thread you'll see quite a few casual CGN'ers can keep very tight groups freehand at 25yds. 50yds will open them up no doubt but...

There's a huge difference between 25 and 50 yards. The pic in the OP shows almost all the shots inside the ten ring. The comment was that it was an average 50yrd group with a revolver. I've shot in the Canadian Nationals Free Pistol match and very few shooters in Canada can hold that standard at 50m,even with a free pistol let alone a revolver.
If anyone wants to film themselves doing it I'll gladly be proved wrong but other than a few high level guys it ain't happening. The world record is in the 580's out of 600 for reference.
