SW Ontario Gun shops - recommend

After a very disappointed weekend browsing a local gun shop's open house, the only bright spot has been the Bass Pro Deer flyer that arrived in the mail.... I know where I will be next weekend!!

I know Bass Pro has greater purchasing power than the little guys so they can buy in > quantities, but my assumption is the real money to be made in this business is NOT in new gun sales, but rather in all the accessories and especially in the ammunition.

I was shocked to see that the fellows working the local sale wouldn't at least match a Bass Pro, SIR or Wholesale price to sell a rifle knowing that with the purchase of a new muzzleloader I would also need to buy: a scope, rings/base, powder, sabots, trigger lock, carrying case, sabots, cleaning kit, etc....... and yet there was no deal. So, I walked out supprised that I spent absolutely NO money at this event (that I have been anxiously waiting weeks for).

Can anyone recommend a gun shop in SW Ont. that has fair pricing and not so cocky customer service? Or - as per my first paragraph - should I just stop the searching and head down to Bass Pro?

Thoughts?
 
I know the shop you are talking about, I walked out last time I went as well. I'd check out Eli's in Simcoe, excellent customer service, Al Simmons in Hamilton is good and a smaller shop with fair pricing is Grech in Mount Forest. If you check out Eli's there is also a new shop called triggers and bows in Burford, I haven't been but my friend says its ok.

The shop in question would not even match pricing in the Bass Pro flyer.

I've talked to Eli's in Simcoe to check prices, but never had a chance to visit. How are the prices vs. others?

I went to that "sale" you are talking about. I was stupid and impulse purchased a rifle and scope. I think from now on I'll stick with buying off CGN or on-line retailers. Ammo I will still have to purchase locally though, probably from CT or Wally's.

What did you buy?

I made 2 offers that I thought were more than fair and both were rejected. I am not sure if the sales people were either short sighted or simple minded... but I was prepared to invest in a scope, sling, accessories etc...
 
Well, at least with the Stevens I think the rifle is pretty value priced as is and there isn't a massive markup as per some other offerings at that sale! What caliber did you get?
 
You might want to try Ontario Gun Services up in Clinton. About an hour north but worth the drive. Bought a CZ 452 there recently, it was around $70 cheaper than the store with the sale. Jim is an honest guy, and will wheel and deal if he has some room.

Is the place in Clinton the shop that looks like it is ran out of the fellows garage? I was there a few years back buying sabots in November and they had a pretty good selection.
 
Take a ride to Shooter's Choice in Waterloo. Goble's is ok and there's the gun shop on Dundas. I forget the name. Nice people, but not a lot of selection. West of Forest City Surplus on the north side.

From my experience CK gun room is no better than the other down the road. I was excited when they first opened up, to at last see someone taking a serious run at the monopoly down the road. Sad to say that's not going to happen. Their pricing is as bad as gobles and their selection of everything else is poor. They just don't get it... If someone could come into London and offer as wide a variety of ammunition as gobles, and price their new rifles more in line with reality .... they would easily run the 2 locals out of business.

Thats the place, great guy to deal with, as well as the others working that he has in from time to time. Does Gunsmithing as well, but only on non restricted's.

Now is just nasty.

You walk into a shop, get in touch with some real hunters, chat about what's best with people that - unlike the internet- don't turn 16 next month, and fiddle with whatever you want not many miles from your house.......AND you want them to match the price of a superstore that hires whoever has a resume and makes most of the money by mailorder.
I went to BassPro and it was a huuuuuge disappointment. Both the TO one and the one near Detroit. I'm not going to start bashing BP, this thread is not about that. But to expect a small store to match prices with a giant is like asking your corner store to match Wallmart price..... And I believe you never ask them that , do you?

For the record, I went to the store you're talking about.... and didn't like it. I appreciated the fact that they had some odd thing in there.... like RWS 22LR ammo and of sorts....but I expected a lot more

If you take the time to drive to Leamington, you can pay a visit to Manfred .... Very good stuff. I miss him. Other than that, Elwood Epps.
 
I dont blame the little guys, for not matching Bass Pro Prices.
And quite frankly they cant buy there guns for the price Bass Pro was advertizing some of there stuff, Would you sell something for less profit.
if you are talking about the SEB-2 for 1500 some odd you better buy it there, because I bet the little guys buy the gun for more tahn that off stoeger!
I no they do!

I will still stick with the little guy! Once you build a rep with a certain gun store, they will treat you right!
