swage brass

Hi. You can either buy a primer pocket swager(RCBS, I think) or just remove the crimp with your deburring/chamfering tool. The latter is slow, but it works well. It only needs a wee bit of brass removed. You can see when the crimp is gone by eye.

I use the built in swager on the Dillon 1050.

I load calibers where it's a regular occurrence to find crimped brass. The built in swagger is good insurance.

I used a ball end carbide Burr for a die grinder to do about a thousand cases. Turned it in a metal lathe, but a drill press would work too.

There are a couple different available solutions out there, with a pretty broad spread of price vs. labor inputs.

Cheers

I chuck up a deburring tool in my small lathe, and remove the crimp. Easy and fast. I have had very poor luck with the RCBS swaging tool. Have read good reports about the Dillon.

I picked up a used Dillon Super Swage 600 years ago for a good price and it works great, a new one on the Dillon site is now $100.95 so that might be a bit pricey unless you have buckets of brass to swage.

My experience with the RCBS tool has been just the opposite on military brass. But I have to admit I remove the primer crimp with a de-burring tool more often than not these days, especially since I load up relatively small batches at a time.

Wow, I'm surprized by that comment tiriaq, I've done hundreds of military 308 with mine and have been very happy with the results. Way better than removing it with a deburring tool and a cordless drill. I've never done small primers though, as I don't have a 223 and all my TCU brass is commercial.

get a dillon super swage if you don't want to fuss around.
Everything else is inferior.
"trimming" the rim with whatever is a no no for me. Whole deburring tool is something I wouldnt want to do.

Will do the job perfectly and quickly. Just dump the case, lower handle, done.
less than 5 seconds per case.
Just did 1000

the only thing that's better is a 1050 press.
