I was wondering, is there a certain distance between the ends of the swager rod and the back up rod with the press in the closed position (handle down) to which you set up your swager on 1050? If there is, is that distance different for each caliber case?

I'm afraid you need to set the swager and back up rod for each cartridge. It's helpful when you are using sorted brass. The back up rod works best when there is a consistancy in the position of the web of the case.
Keep in mind the goal is to work the brass the least amount possible while still achieving a uniform swaging of the primer pocket. Try to keep an eye on the case rim as it sits in the shellplate while you adjust the swager and back up rod. It's a balancing act.
