Swan Hills Bear Attack

I heard from a F&W officer off the record that the bear was indeed killed by the victim with 6 rounds from a handgun. I didn't hear what caliber, I would guess 44. Sounds like charges will be laid soon, if they haven't been already. The perfect case of carried by 6 or tried by 12. I'm in for the defence fund.

Sounds like the handgun saved his a**.

Wow, just WOW... Let me see if I get this straight...

Bear attacks guy, guy DEFENDS himself from bear with a handgun, Crown proceeding with charges...

Too bad the guy didn't have a mare's leg in 44... Essentially our laws disable folks heading into the woods by restricting what they can carry for protection... A handgun is easier to carry if you're working or even just hiking...

Poor guy, mauled by a bear & about to get mauled by the Crown...

Regards
Jay

The whole defending himself with a handgun part would be all good if he had a permit to carry while hunting... I have a permit to carry as I work in the woods around Whitecourt/Swanhills/Fox Creek. That said my permit is only good if I am WORKING. I can't take it if I go hunting, bow or rifle. I guess they trust me enough to defend myself if I am working to pay taxes, but if I am on my own time I am not worth the protection. :(

I don't think he means they lied, even the CO's I've talked to Alberta side said there is "no question" the survey was very flawed. They didn't lie, they simply omitted. I do it all the time with the wife.

Pretty much like they "omitted" to do a count north of Grande Praire. That count is so flawed that it's pathetic.

This might be a good case to use to promote more liberal ATC requirements. Let's face it, this hunter would have been dead but for the handgun that he was carrying.

Maybe a defense fund could be set up for him if he wants it. I'm good for a couple of hundred $ for a good cause like this one.

Yet it's no where that I can find on Google... May I was given false info, or maybe the crown thought better and dismissed it? I am thinking of requesting information on the caliber of bullet that killed the bear. That will tell the story. I would think that should be obtainable under the information act.
