swapping upper assembly question

I am going to be buying an AR soon.

At a later date is it feasible for me to buy a 24" heavy barrelled upper assembly for more precision shooting? Is it quick and relatively easy to swap the upper? Am I better off just buying a whole new rifle?

I'd really like any input on this. Thank you!

Uppers are interchangable. Just take the 16" off, and put the 24" on. That's all there is to it.

No need to buy a whole new rifle, unless you want to, of course. ;)

That's all there is to it. You may need to use something to push on the pins to get them out if they're tight. Mine will push out with finger pressure.
 
Not to try and throw a wrench into the works, but there are two pivot pin hole sizes. My 20" A2 "civilianized" version is a big hole lower. Just be sure that the AR you buy is a mil-spec lower with a small pivot pin, or you will need to use an adapter pin. These pins require tools and care to use properly, they are fiddly and can actually damage your gun upon closure if positioned incorrectly.
 
I was thinking of a stag 1R. I think its mil specs.

Do any of you have experience doing this? Is 24" overkill? I've seen alot of people happy with 18" for precision shooting.

A stock 20" AR is quite a tack driver in its own right. If you want to take your shots out past 500m then the 24" might be just the ticket. Otherwise a 20" is probably just fine.

Hate to burst your bubble, but the only place that a restricted AR can legally be discharged is at an approved range.

Actually yeah you are right.

I owned a Colt H-bar 17 years ago. Back then it was legal to shoot on private land.

I guess I forgot. I haven't owned/fired a restricted firearm in over ten years.

I have to get used to the new laws.
 
I got a Bushmaster Varmitter equiped with a 24 inches Chrome Molly barrel and I have not seen any 20 inches AR15 beat the accuracy of this one yet.

One rifle does not make it the norm, but if long range and accuracy is your cup of tea, go for the 24 inches barrel.

PS : If my dad had land like yours.....hum...:rolleyes:

Just outta ciruousity, how well does your 24" shoot?

Have you fired it out past 300 yards?

Also, any reloading advice would be appreciated. I am getting an AR soon and while I have reloaded ammo for years, I've never done it for a 5.56.
