The majority of the M96's are walnut, with lesser numbers of beech, and less still of elm, followed by maple, the last two understood to have been used only during the war (1915-1918). As for the M38, the "Huskys" (made in the 1940's) I think are all beech, but the M38 Carl Gustaf and Obendorf (commonly called the M96/38) are as for the M96. There always seems to be the odd exception though.....
Yours is a Husky M38, so "should" be beech, which is typically very light in colour, but with time (and stain) can be very dark. With a well-focussed close up, it should be easy to confirm what it is.
