I snagged this all matching, in the grease 96/38 with a factory turned down bolt. Is this factory? If so how rare is it?
I am not to worried if it isn't as it will be a cut-over rifle for moose hunting.

Nice score! Elm stocked as well which is correct for that year (1916). The bolt is correct as they used both straight and bent handle bolts on both M38's and M38/M96 short rifles! This rifles original bolt was replaced when it went through the rebuild to short rifle for any number of reasons. I have one very similar. The bolt should be a Husqvarna made one!

All excellent info thanks! I snagged it cheap because it has somebody's initials carved into the stock. Not a worry for me as I don't stare at my rifles, I use them!

Thanks again!

Very nice snag i've got a 1907 Carl gustaf that was cut down to the short rifle length and has the bent down bolt from husqvarna. So would be factory and not rare just uncommon as far as I can tell.

enjoy the new toy!

Very nice rifle! Those Swedish 96, 38, and 96/38s are beauties.

By "cut-over" I hope you don't mean to cut the rifle stock???? :runaway:

I'm not much for info, just thought I'd share...
I have a 1941 Husqvarna M38 - all numbers matching, threaded muzzle, turned down bolt.
I have to say, it's one of my favorite guns to shoot!

Enjoy!

Swede 96/38, the rifle appears all correct. The bolt was replaced at one time and correctly stamped. Is the muzzle threaded with a cap on it.
If you intend to modify it as a sporter, don't, your odds of being hit by lightening will GREATLY increase.

HAHA! No, a "cut-over" is a small section of cleared land surrounded by woods. Where someone has harvested a small amount of firewood. Usually no more than 150 yards long.

I would never ruin a military rifle with all the cheap options nowadays.

I have an M96, German made in 1900, with turn down bolt. That's because it was a former sniper rifle. I have the side plate, but no mount, rings, or scope. I'm also missing the stock disc. That's OK, still fun to shoot.

OP, I have a similar rifle with an 1899 Carl Gustafs receiver. They are great rifles for bush hunting, light and handy combined with the superb 6.5x55 cartridge.

From what I've read, the barrels on the 96/38 rifles and the stock put onto them were not cut down. They installed new barrels to replace the old 29in barrels and new stocks. It was cheaper and easier at the time.

That is a very nice rifle are there any more to be had? I have a Swedish Mauser / strait bolt / threaded barrel. A great milsurp!

I think the only way to get one is watch the Equipment Exchange. The only surplus ones left are at Tradeex. However they are all m96 rifles, with 29 inch barrels.

I just got the rifle yesterday. Turns out it has a 6.49 bore. It also doesn't have any of the bore rating numbers struck which tells me it is a "0" (I think). The bore is absolutely brand new inside. Also the muzzle is not threaded. What a sweet find for 300 bucks shipped! I didn't think there were any deals left like this on the EE ;)

Not many, that's for sure!
