Swedish M96 bolt modification

I have done a number of these bolt handle alterations. It is not a beginner's job; the bolt can be ruined. Have the work done by an experienced, skilled gunsmith.

The sad part is that you won't be happy with the results in the end. Extra high rings might clear, but it will be hard to get a cheek weld or more of chin weld then.
By the time you spend money on a bolt handle rework, you could of gotten a used proper hunting rifle.
From experience, if you want a hunting rifle, then get one.

I somewhat echo what EHG said, the time/money you will put in to alter it may not be worth it in the end. Is the receiver already drilled and tapped for mounts? If yes I would be more likely to go ahead with getting your bolt altered to fit if you're set on that route.
If it's not already drilled and tapped and is still in military configuration I would say check out the EE or tradex for some already sportered rifles. You often see them already drilled and tapped, with a M38 or altered bolt and sometime even low profile safeties and now stocks.

It is already drilled and tapped for a scope, and it is sporterized. I am a machinist, and I have a bud that's a gunsmith. Just want to know what it entails. Can a different set of rings/mounts fix it? Thanks!!

If your friend is a gunsmith, shouldn't you be asking him about it?

If I'm not mistaken(which i very well could be) you need to heat the bolt handle to red hot then bend it, then refinish it. Stock will likely require inletting as well.

I've got a nice one from Tradex that was already done. I'll upload some pic's and post them in a couple.
It's not Rocket science guys.
This is an 98 with a Mauser SSR right from Tradex. Undycked with since acquiring

Very nice... Bolt handle looks a bit tight on the scope bell but the safety seems to clear. Side mount too!

That config allows good grip on the bolt handle even with gloves on.

It is tight, it's got a racing stripe or two on the bell. And the safety does not clear, it's the variable dial that has interference. But it could be set back a touch to help it clear, and it will clear the scope tube...just not the variable dial
But that's how it came, so I posted to try to help out

It's a pretty capable gun. It took an Elk in 1 shot this fall; he wobble walked a bit though.
The GF's son shot his elk 5 times with a 338 to put it on the ground. In fairness I don't know the range or where he hit it though.
46 grains of 4895 behind a 250 grain pill for 2100 fps. Seated quite long at 3.189", but that's how the throat is on this particular rifle. The loaded rds look funny with the Long nosed look, but they work well

Very nice! Thanks for the insight! What caliber is it? I talked to my friend who is a gunsmith, and he said he's modded lots of them, so we'll give it a go in the new year.

9.3 x 57mm
Pretty much a 338-06 IMO.
The mauser is a smidge shorter than the -06. A touch less powerful I'd guess.
9.3 x 62 is better, but if you can get a deal on a 9.3 x 57...why change it? You 'must' reload for it...unless you are 'That guy' that cracks off 5 rounds into a rock on opening day and says "Good to go" Factory ammunition is quite rare.
