Hi there. Milsurp newbie (and gun newbie in general) here.

Just bought my first gun last week. Its a Swedish Mauser M38 Short Rifle. Bought it from my freinds uncle when we visited them at their cabin last weekend, he's a Mauser collector and gave me a pretty good deal on the thing!

I got to fire it a few times and the ammunition I had run through it were handloaded 6,5x55 rounds. However I don't have the means to hand load my own ammunition at the moment, so I bought a box of Winchester SuperX 6,5x55 rounds.

I'm just curious if it would be safe to fire newer ammunition through it, its something I had forgotten to ask when I first purchased the gun over there.

Thanks!

T.

Great choice for your first rifle! The Swedish mausers are top quality. Modern factory ammo should be perfectly fine.

Just curious, what year was it manufactured? Should be right on the top of the receiver.

Great choice for a first rifle but you may get addicted to this fine rifle and fine cartridge and lots of great rifles in this and similar calibers. I wish I had taken the time to get one decades ago as once I tried one I have been accumulating them as military and sporters (Krags, Mausers, CZ and Custom) for the past 4 years. Just a fine rifle!

I've a close to pristine 1896 long rifle. The tooling on it is the best of all my milsurps. It's almost too tight for a battle rifle.
Swede's are excellent weapons. Nice catch.

Hey, thanks guys!

The collector sold it to me for $150 with a box of ammo, great guy :). Its a Mauser make, 1900, Here's a photo.

I fired it that weekend and it was great. Very smooth action and all! My only complaint is that it shoots high due to them being stuck at 250 / 300m for the lowest sight setting. I'm after a taller front sight if any of you guys have a source on those!

Thanks!

Yours was originally an M96 long rifle before the Swedes chopped it down to the carbine length. As for a taller front site I think Brownells sells them.

I guarantee an absolute addiction to this caliber once somebody has fired off a few rounds in virtually any rifle chambered for 6.5X55.I just love this round,we have 6 rifles in this caliber and all of them are great shooters.

Wow, methinks $150 for an M38 Swede with a box of ammo is an awesome deal, congrats.
:)

And yes modern factory loaded 6.5x55 should be safe to use in your rifle.

If you get more info regarding new front sights availability in Canada, please post it hear. My M96 also shoots a foot high as its open sight starts from 300M. I hate to see it sit in the safe.

Like somebody else suggested, Brownells does sell them for $15 US, but I don't think they ship to Canada.
