Swedish Mauser Safety issues

I just recently bought a tradex sporterized M96 Mauser in 6.5x55. I love it so far. Decent accuracy and I have dies and bullets to work up some loads for it now. But I noticed the other night that the safety is a little quirky.

It has a side safety that I assume is part of an aftermarket trigger. When the safety is engaged with the bolt open you cannot close the bolt. Is this normal operation? I guess it could be a bolt hold closed feature for when the bolt is closed?(I will have to check that tonight) But it seems slightly counterintuitive to be unable to work the bolt with the safety on, especially with a blind magazine firearm.

A piece of information that may help is that the rifle still has its original wing military safety as well.

That's pretty normal , don't forget , the 96 is a controlled feed , you can empty the mag without actually closing the bolt . I'd bet that the safety will lock the bolt closed when the rifle is in battery . Sounds like a typical aftermarket trigger , enjoy , great rifle and cartridge .
It's pretty common to leave the original safety intact as well , I've done the same thing , again , pretty standard .
 
Not a blind mag, push the internal button on the floorplate, slide back, and it will pop off.
On a factory 96, when you pull the trigger to fire the rifle, there is a little tab on the trigger housing that locks the bolt closed for the firing sequence. You can see this notch in the bolt on the right side when you open it.
Take some pics of the trigger set up out of the stock and we can try and figure out what's going on.

I think we have different descriptions for blind mags...
This is a gunsmith description:
"The blind magazine style rifles utilizes an internal magazine that doesn't protrude through the bottom of the stock, such as the magazine found on a Remington 700 ADL rifle."

Very few people do this, as per it's an awkward operation to open a Mauser floorplate to empty the magazine, so most people just cycle the bolt, like for any blind magazines.

As for the OP's trigger, they usually had to make a small groove (notch) on the bolt body to have the trigger "bolt locking" tab engaged when fitting the aftermarket trigger.
It is normal for a Husqvarna rifle (the post 96 and 98) to have the bolt locked when the safety's on, because it's much safer when you walk in the wood with the loaded gun at the shoulder as they do, so the branches don't open the bolt while moving in thick brush.
It you don't like it, it's pretty simple to grind off the small tab, but personally, I would keed it that way. If you don't feel confortable to unload the gun while not on safety, you still can use the orignal safety if it's still possible to operate it....
 
Hitzy - thanks for the video, i understand my mistake now between removable floorplate vs blind mag. at this point the original safety wont function due to a scope on the rifle. But with the help I received I better understand what is actually happening with my safety. Its operation the way it should, just not how I anticipated (not the same as a remington 700 2 pos safety.) I think I can live with it the way it is, Just short stroking the bolt removes cartridges in a reasonably expedient manner. It is seems quirky to do with the safety off
