Where can I get a taller front sight for my Swedish Mauser M1896 long-rifle? I have to shoot below the bulls-eye at 100 yards just to get it to touch the top of the paper. We're talking 6" high or more when sights are at lowest setting.

What ammunition are you using? THough I dont know the specifics the military round that the rifle would be sighted for at the factory would likley have a heavier grain bullet than what you might find in stores.
I've heard the same complaint from people using Igman in their Mosins, and it was chalked up to bullet weight.?

Brownells has higher Mauser front sights. If you can find a sight for a M38, it is higher than a 96's. The lowest setting on your sight is 300m, so it would be high at 100m.

The next slice of the little brass disc indicates the elevation aiming error when shooting the standard m/41 Swedish service load, which used a 140 grain boat-tail spitzer bullet at a MV of around 800 m/s. There are three Swedish words in this sector of the disc. "Torped" indicates the 140 grain BT spitzer bullet (there was an earlier 156 grain RN bullet), "Overslag" means over, followed by a space and then "Str." Str is the abbreviation for streck, a unit of angle, and there are 6300 streck to a circle. Streck were used in a manner similar to the way North American shooters use minutes of angle. If there is a number in the blank space between Overslag and Str. it indicates the amount the rifle shoots over in terms of streck. 1 streck equals approximately 1/10 meter at 100 meters. So a 1 in the space on the disc indicates that rifle would shoot 10 cm (or a little less than 4") above the point of aim at 100 meters. The space is blank on my rifle's disc, indicating that it shoots to point of aim.

I had the same problem until I bought a higher front post from Enterprise Arms in the US. It cost next to nothing and cured my low shooting problems. Now, dialed in for 200 actually hits the gong at 200. Check out Shotgun News for their order number and other info.

Swede shootin High?

I had that same problem when I used to shoot it open sights. I had to aim so that I barely saw the front tip in the rear groove and then see was spot on.

I think my disc is pretty empty. I'll likely purchase a taller front sight.

Your disc translated.....

1. Torped (unmarked) = No difference between point of aim and point of impact when using m/41 bullet.

2. Bore measurement = 6.50mm

3. #2 marked bore condition (1,2,3) = "rust in the corners between the lands and grooves, some spots of rust in the grooves"

Note: Disc information only valid at time measurements and observations were taken.
