Swedish Mauser - What to do?

Here are a few pictures of what I'm dealing with.

Somebody trimmed down the trigger guard.

The pipe wrench marks aren't as bad as I remember....

The muzzle. You can see where sight base was soldered on.

The underside of the receiver.

The barrel is only a bit over 18" long. I don't think that is long enough to do what I want to do with it.

It looks like I'll have to decide between getting another barrel and selling it.

I ave the exact same rifle, except its a 1910

Some targets:

I finally got a chance to shoot some targets with it.

It turned out I couldn't get the receiver sight low enough to aim directly at the bull. I had the targets taped to clay pigeon boxes and I ended up having to aim at the bottom edge of the box, which seemed to work ok.

I've since relieved the stock to allow the receiver sight to slide down further.

All targets were shot from prone at 100 yards.

I had the best luck with RL 22. Got a 5 shot group of 1.8" (4 into .8"). The other holes on the target were from getting the sights adjusted:

I fired 2 ten shot groups with two other loads as well:

I guess it shows potential, especially with the RL 22 load. I'll play around with it some more but it looks like I'll probably keep it in it's current form and just blue it and refinish the stock. Then I'll decide whether to keep it or sell it.

No pic of the rifle? :(
That first group looks promising..
I should be picking up mine thursday..hopefully.

DUH! Disregard..I read page 4.
It looks great twotone..

I am going to be doing something similar, however starting off with a Husqvarna 1600 barrelled action in 6.5x55, that is sitting in the basement begging me to start on it. (The 1600 can be described as a modified Mauser small ring 98 action)

However I will shoot it first before doing all of the work, you know, just in case........

  • First the barrel and action are going to be soaked in Evapo Rust, to remove bluing and any traces of rust, then polished and cleaned up of any nicks etc, and recrowned. (It already has a bend bolt and drilled and tapped for scope bases)

  • Then I am going to reblue it, using slow rust bluing. Already have the bluing fluid and am experimenting. (A norinco 1911 has been chosen as the guinea pig)

  • Semi inletted stock has been ordered.

  • Already have Devcon titanium epoxy putty for bedding.

  • Will be ordering titanium threaded rod for wrist reinforcement.

  • Apparently Timney is going to be making up a batch of triggers especially for the 1600 series.
Did I miss anything?

PS, it will never be worth the work that will go into it, but will be a very nice showpiece.

Picked mine up yesterday. Very pleased with the work done..now to finish it.

No worries about free floating the barrel. I could throw a cat down the stock under the barrel. :D

That is looking really nice.

The scope base install looks very good.

I think you mentioned what stock that is at some point but refresh my memory.

Did he both scallop and bend the bolt handle?

What will this look like when you're done. Does the stock need finishing as well?

I received an education on mounting the scope, how scopes work internally, all so zeroing it will require minimum work.
It is a Richards micro-fit stock. I have to smooth the edges, bed it and as I discovered..remove some material on the cheek piece as the bolt can't be removed as it is.
I'm going to finish the stock using tru oil . From what I've read it should have a satin finish and the grain should really stand out.
Yes he turned it, scalloped it and it has a slight rearward bend as well.

And the metal will be Gunkoted? Barrel too?

I like True Oil. You might want to get some pumice or Rottenstone from Brownell's for a really nice satin look when you're done. Ends up super smooth.

I really like that stock. How much did it set you back, if you don't mind...

Yes. barrel, action, bolt handle..pretty much everything that can rust. :)

thanks for the tip. I'll check it out.

They were on sale for $139US. Mine cost around $160 due to me getting a left hand stock and a deeper barrel channel.
I'm very happy with the quality. It took a long time to get here though.

Which stock is better is a 9mm vs 45 discussion around here.
My friend that has a 6.5 ordered a laminate from Stocky Stocks. I think he paid $129 US and it arrives finished with recoil pad and I believe sling mounts.
he had it in 2 weeks.

46.5 grains of RL 22 is a waste of powder in that short barrel.

Personally I wouldn't go above 45 grains or RL 22.

Shame someone chopped up that sweet carbine, but good for you for keeping it functional.

A nice group .More than adequate for a hunting rifle. You don't likely need another barrel but if you did don't hesitate to deal with Tradex. I've purchased 3 firearms from them including a CG 63 and an M- 96 and they are honest men to deal with.

Striker, they say imitation is the greatest form of flattery, your making me want to flatter that beauty!!!
:) Thanks. this is my first project gun..unfortunately I haven't had any time to do any more work on it..
Here is my friends with his Stocky stock on it.

Here is a 2 round group I shot at 100 yards off the bench with it.

Coffee

Hey Striker,

It looks like I really owe you a coffee now....I just sold the rifle along with the stock you gave me!

I bought a Tikka 695 Walnut / Blue from a fellow on the EE. Can't wait to get my mitts on it.

I may have to come try some long range with you in the fall if the offer is still open.

Also, let me know if you decide to try Rottenstone or Pumice to do the final finish on your stock. I now have a good supply of each and it only takes a little to do a stock.

I'll post a photo or two of the new rifle when I get it.

tikka's are sweet rifles.

The offer has no expiry date!:D
I'm planning on trying it..I'll let you know when I get that far!
Still have to order a Timney from mysticplayer and modify the trigger guard for it, then finish inleting it..

Wow....imagine wasting a whole 1.5 grains of powder:eek:

Personally my Sweed shot so well with 46.5 gr. of RL-22 that I wasnt' about to start downloading so I can save on powder .
