Quick question for those of yous who have made up targets.

I am going to put up a torso sized gong at the range ( hanging from a chain so it swings) for some shoot and move drills for me and some buddies.

It's just for 22. Those cheap SOB's can fork out cash themselves if they want stuff to survive centerfire.

When I go to my friendly local steel place to get this chunk of metal, what thickness is enough so that it will survive.

PS I have to carry it 100 yards, so I am going to try and balance out the strength with weight.

3/8 plate

3/8 is what I used, its heavy so it doesnt get as much swing I found you had to wait lots to shoot the 1/4

I agree. My last one was 3/8 and I liked it. I hang them on baling wire through 1/8 holes in the top corners. I just shape the wire in to about a 1" ring thru the holes so it swings freely and leave about 18" of wire so I can hang it from branches, 2 X 4's etc. Splatter doesn't break the wire and if I shoot one off, no big deal to twist on another.
