I have heard of an outfit in Alberta that uses a swipe card system to activate the traps on a sporting clays course.
I have no idea how thisa would work except that the shooter's number is recorded and he is billed, and his card activates the machines?

I have questioned this, and have only got generalities , no concrete answers.
it would be great if it works, but I'm wondering what the set up costs would be.
of course, the traps would still have to be maintained and loaded, etc.

Does anybody have any info on a trap system like this anywhere?

Silver Willow Sporting Clays and the Calgary Firearms Center (the old Dewinton club) uses this system. You buy your clays beforehand on the card(like a preloaded bank or coffee card). At each station you swipe the card and shoot the allotted number of clays (or more if you wish) and the card total goes down.
I've seen the system used elsewhere in the US as well.
It really cuts down on the abuse of self monitored clay shooters shooting more clays than they purchased.

I believe both Beaverhill Sporting Clays near Tofield and Silver Willow near Carstairs use these systems. Don or Josh Day at Silver Willow, 403-337-2490. Contact at Beaverhill is Derryl Weatherby, 780-886-3454. I am going from memory but I believe Briley markets a system called i-Pull. Also I believe Long Range LLC makes a similar system.

Roue du Roy in Hemmingford, QC uses a similar system with a "key" that you insert into the controllers on their skeet and sporting clays course. You buy the number of birds you want to shoot at the clubhouse and they put the credit on the key.

Thanks guys!
I was talkig to Derek Lawery and he informed me that Briely sells a coin box system as well.
It seems the biggest advantage is over shooting clays.
I will contact silver willow and get the low down on maintaince, etc.

Winnipeg Trap and Skeet has had the Briley coin (token) boxs on one each of Trap & Skeet fields for going on three years now without any problems to speak of.

Galt Sportsmen just adopted the Promatic Claymate system for its clay target sports. The card is preloaded with a set number of targets for the squad, the card is clipped to the thrower and targets are then thrown. Good system.

So, how does the coin box work for payment, loadng f the raps, etc, planemaker?
We only have trap and skeet so it may be a better way to go.
I talked to silver Willow ad there is a swipe thimngy at each station, you swipe your pre-paid card and it thrwos a bird each time the card is swiped.
However, getting the payment put on the card is a big one for use as we are non- profit, and keepng the traps loaded would be anotrher.

Tokens are purchased from the club during regular hours of operation. Usually I'll buy 10 or so at a time.

The advantage for a member is that if one wants to, training on how to safely load and turn on the machines along with combinations to locks to access the grounds, Skeet and Trap houses is given and members can self serve off regular hours.

Very convenient for those that have work hours that make shooting during the weekday evenings a challenge or retirees to play during the day.
One token allows machines to throw 25 targets and or can be adjusted to have a few extras in case of breakage.

The system I use in Florida works off either a key, or a card. You can pre-program the sysyem to throw delayed tagets, true pairs, report pairs, following pairs, singles. You load the card or key, place it on the machine and it either counts up or down.

The card system can be loaded with 27 targets. It deducts them in groups of 25,26 or 27 to allow for breakage. Each person puts their card on the reader, then they shoot a round of skeet or trap.

Not cheap thoiugh.

Here's a link to Longrange that sells them.

Tokens are $6.00 apiece. Trap has voice release so you can shoot by yourself. Skeet uses the normal pickle on the cord. Works best for two to shoot skeet.

Token price mentioned is cost per round at our club, so that is set by your club. Purchase price of the tokens themselves from Briley I do not know, if that is what Cat meant by how much is a token.
I think that the club is looking seriously at getting a voice release pickle for the Skeet field this season.

I have heard that a major drawback to the briley token system is that tokens are all the same so if someone has tokens from another club they can use them in the machine and your club is not getting the money. Not to mention the problem of slugs or other fake tokens. I think it needs to be a fairly large club before these systems make financial sense. I would ask your self first or try to determine if you are losing money on the targets in the first place, or is it enough to justify a card system. Some clubs do not allow any shooting with out a director present. Also remember that a lot of clubs in the U.S. are actually private business's and do not have the free labour that most CDN. clubs do.

As far as I know we are the only club in Manitoba using the token machines. I have not heard of problems with people using slugs or the like at our club.

The tokens do look a lot like a loonie. One member said that they realized afterwards that they had used a $6.00 token instead of a loonie when buying a cup of Tim's.
