If you have an AR or other .22cal centerfire, you could make one of these:

I drilled out the primer pocket so a 209 shotgun primer could fit in comfortably.

I used an ice pick to put a small dimple in the neck of the case to better hold the .22 pellet in place.

It all holds together well, and you just drop it in to your regular .223/5.56 rifle.

It's accurate and powerful, going completely through a tin can. I estimate it goes around 900fps, but would need to chronograph the pellet to be sure.

It's not too loud either, no louder than a high velocity .22 pellet gun. No hearing protection is required.

Neat. Put some time in with this and post some results. A chrony would be interesting to see as well.

You'd think it wouldn't cause excessive leading or anything as the pellet is moving much faster than a typical 500 fps airgun. Should work well with all .223 platforms.

Very cool experiment. Have you guys heard anything more about the ###XX #########X kit for the SAN rifles that was rumored to be coming out this year???

I have been warned that the topic I mistakenly asked about was one of those things that the Stalin and his communist dogs upstairs doesn't like us talking about. I don't understand why, but apparently the topic is a complete no go for those who know what I am talking about. My mistake for stepping out of line comrades.

IMO it shouldn't be an issue as it's still subsonic (lots of 900+fps pellet guns out there that don't have leading issues). I am slightly concerned about it leading up the gas port though. I've shot 50 pellets so far, and there are no signs of leading issues.

Ar180shooter, small rifle primers (even magnum) won't give it enough push to get through the barrel?

I haven't tried it with anything other than shotgun primers. The reason I'm using shotgun primers is so I can use a stick to push the pellet through the rear of the case before putting in the primer. The pellet gets stuck on that small dimple I put in the neck, and the pellet then holds itself in place. This allows you to reload it in the field (you can push out the 209 primer without special tools).

Are you loading into the chamber by hand or from the mag? If from the mag I'd do a few test loadings and extractions without firing to see if the pellet gets pushed back into the case.

The more I look at this the more interested I am. Looks like it's time to get the XCR out and try this.

I'm loading them one at a time, I can't get them to feed from the mag, unfortunately.

Plus, I've only made one casing to test it out, so I'd have to load it every time anyways.

i wonder what the legal aspects of a sub 500 fps in a non or restricted platform in a no discharge area ie: not a firearm if under 500

Yup, small rifle primers work in my savage .223. I also use to load primed 44 Magnum cases with cut up glue sticks. They went through cardboard boxes at 25 yards.

If you wanna try something different, glue a large pistol primer to the front of a pellet and shoot it at a 3/4" sheet of plywood and see the smiles really start. I terrorize mice at the camp with exploding pellets because I am a redneck that way. Other than experimenting, I see no practical reason to use a center fire rifle to shoot pellets wth. My pellet gun does it more accurately, with more FPS, quieter and cheaper. Adding 5 cents(primer) to the cost of each pellet makes for expensive pellet gunning. But....that cost is justified if they esplode on impact :)
