Swiss Arms Classic Green, Broken Extractor Pin

Hey everyone, was cleaning my Classic green before a winter camping trip and found piece of something broken, after searching around I realized it was a piece of my extractor pin. It had failed and about 2 thirds of it was in my lower receiver and the other 1/3rd still inside the bolt holding the extractor in place, this is a good thing because the little spring in there requires a special tool to compress it's under so much pressure.

Round count is around 4000, this is the first time I have seen one myself but I know it happens. (Broken Extractor pin's that is)

Now for the fix, I had a bolt sent in for extractor replacement a year or so ago and when I got it back he sent the old extractor pieces, including the pin. I took the old undamaged extractor pin and hammered it into the empty side of the bolt. It soon went deep enough it engaged the extractor, and then pushed the other broken piece out the other side. Hence replacing my own extractor pin.

Again it's a one way pin, so I am very lucky it worked out this way.

You have poor luck with the Swiss rifles!!!

Or it could be the fact that he is actually putting some use to his rifle(s). I would bet money that the actual number of Swiss Arms owners that have 4000 rounds through their rifles in Canada is fairly low. Actually I would take that bet with most AR owners as well.

I believe you are incorrect.

If you can afford a $3000-$4000 rifle...you can afford to shoot it when ammo is at the MOST $10/20 rounds and much, much cheaper if you buy bulk or surplus.

Part of the big reason people buy this gun is so they can shoot it anywhere, hunt with it and so on...go out to the bush and blasting a few 100 rounds with an SKS is pretty common, I cannot see why you wouldn't do that if you had a NR .223 gun.

These rifles are built well and can take much more then he can put through them and still chug along, I just think his luck has been sub par.

500 rounds tru my Black special but only good ammo, no corrosive stuff, this rifle is build like a tank and full reliable with good accuracy, dont see having a trouble with this rifle for years... JP.

+1.

I know lots of guys with multiple Swiss arms rifles who are lucky to get a couple hundred rounds a year through their guns. I myself have had a couple of high round count Swiss arms (5000 rounds plus through each gun). I have replaced the extractor pin mentioned in this thread, as well I've had recoil spring issues that caused fte failures and required replacing the recoil spring.

I've sice gotten out of the Swiss arms rifles, but if I were to take the plunge again (which I would in a heartbeat if the ar mag factory lower became available), I'd want to have a spare bolt and a complete spare gas piston/recoil spring assembly.

Cheers,

Brobee

Sorry to hear that Steve. It's obvious that you get the most out of your guns but it's still discouraging. Hope the fix works well and thanks for sharing your experiences, good and no so good alike.

Do you have your Black Special back or is your Classic Green your only rifle for the time being? Just wondering how that whole jamming issue thing is turning-out?

Damn, I'm going to try to act on your cogent advice Brobee and get a place like Wolverine to bring these in for me. The last thing I would ever want is a disabled piece of machinery waiting for a gunsmith to get around to replacing a little pin or a spring to come from Switzerland.

Thank-you guys!

not sure why all the drama, these are mechanical machines that experience a lot of stress, and do wear out.

I believe Steve doesn't exactly sit at a bench and shoot a round hear and there . he seems to run his rifle pretty hard , which they are made for . and as stated above things do wear

4295 rounds since May 1st for the Classic Green the Black Special saw 5322 rounds between Apr,22/2011-May,20-2012

And yes the rifles are reliable by reputation, but mechanical parts do wear (Especially my kind of wear), and I thank those with enough sense to know this, for saying so publicly.

While I think your completely out to lunch if you think most NR black rifle owners shoot this much .223

However, regardless of how hard I use my rifles, I would completely agree that my Black Special experience was very bad luck. This extractor pin is like a less than $10 with shipping kind of a part, while the Black Special simply shiit the bed! Black was bad luck, this is just maintenance.

I test fired it about 200-300 rounds, it worked, and I sold it on the EE, I ended up selling for $300 bux less than I bought it for. Not bad for 5000 rounds down the pipe :)
