Swiss Arms CQB

What is the precise difference between SG550/551 and CQB, in terms of mechanical of gas-system? I've heard that they had to redesign CQB in order to make it that short.

Yes, the 552/CQB had to be redesigned. Since the carbine uses a shorter, 8.9" barrel with a shortened gas tube/piston, the return spring was relocated behind the bolt carrier group, inside the receiver and is guided by a polymer or steel rod that rests on the rear of the receiver housing (similar to an AK-47). The shorter piston was also integrated into the bolt carrier group. Aside from that, a 3-prong flash suppressor and special, ventilated handguards were used.

A peculiar thing about the 552/CQB is that it retained the bayonet lug of the original rifle-length variant (although it obviously can't attach a bayonet due to limited barrel beyond the gas port), while the lug was omitted on some of the shorter 551's.

So they are designed differently, but do they shoot differently, as well? I mean with obvious differences in the length of barrels, are there characteristic difference in performances, that's what I want to know.

You can shoot the CQB out to 300M effectively. After that, things get a little more dicey. However, since the rifle is designed for "Close Quarters Battle" asking it to shoot out to 400-600M is kinda' asinine. At "normal" combat ranges its the cat's ass!

ehh , good luck on the100- 300m with it.... its a house buster and its a cool toy as far as the cats ass IMO its heavy, mag release is awkward, mag insertion is lame, lame rail system. Cool points are very high on looks especially with the urban camo furniture :) fires with butt folded, sounds like a rock concert on crack firing  and love the diopter sights and its the first one anyone wants to touch when I swing open the vault.... ohhhhhhhhhhhh whats that one. :)

AR`s for me are still the cats ass....... a Stag G2 coming home soon

Hmm, I'm having a hard time deciding what to get next. I have a Stag G2 14.5" coming soon.

Do I get the CQB or a 10.5" AR ? There should be no probs importing the CQBs for the time being ... are the AR shorties harder to get with the US export laws? Should that be my priority?

Would you say the 10.5" AR and the CQB have similar ballistics and accuracy?

koalorka, you probably one of each .. what do you think?

The rifle and carbine have a recoil spring around the gas piston. The gas piston on the CQB is too short for this method to work, so it has a similar setup to the AK-47 with a separate recoil spring rod.

I've got to be completely honest here, I never cared for it even before hearing these stories about them breaking. It's not captive, so open the receiver very carefully...

Every review I've ever read in a gun magazine in Europe of the SG552 Commando has that comment in it!

I've got to say though, I was in a gunshop in Belgium a couple of years ago, there was a long rack of hunting rifles along the wall, I asked the dealer which rifle he sold the most of, and he reached under the counter and pulled out a SG552 Commando. "One a week." He told me.

Dude, I dunno what you're smokin'??? :onCrack: awkward mag insertion? :bsFlag: Its the same frickin' system the AK uses or even the M-14. There are how many million AK users??? Practice a little and before long, your mag changes will be on par with the AR-15...better yet, once the SIG mags are rocked in, you KNOW that they're properly seated and they're going to feed 100%

Besides, the Swiss Arms/SIG mags are head and tails way better than the AR-15 mag...only drawback is that they're twice the cost.:( They do snap together, however, and sure make for some quick reloads because of it!

I've got no complaints with any of the rails, but then again, most of the crap guys are sticking on ARs these days is needless trifles. B&T make a good product, although I'd like to see prices come down somewhat.

As for range...I shoot mine on a regular basis at 200M. I'd have no problem qualifying with it at that range. I'll admit though that its tons of fun ripping off five rounds as fast as you can using a holosight at 50M. The stock diopter sights are excellent and one of my favorite features. I like them so much that I pretty much stick with them for most shooting sessions. I don't feel this overwhelming need to hang lights, lasers, etc...of of it. Besides, once you tally up all that crap hanging off most ARs these days, you're probably several pounds over what the CQB is.

LOL, swallow the kool-aid deep thats exactly what makes it not that great its a tight AK and thats not such a great thing from Swiss Arms. And Cyber was right above that uncaptured guide rod is a joke of a design in more than one way.

Bottom line its top 5 cool for restricted toys but it aint no cats a** especially since the AR`s now have 5 more reason why they are the Cats A**

True, true... but one can go for a walk in the woods with a 20" SA but not a 20" AR.

The cats-ass looks different depending on the angle.

Ya from where I am the cats-ass looks like the Tavor S21 sharp shooter, unrestricted Bulpup :D , standard picatinny rail, bipod and Acog ,uses good old AR mags and the new 10rd ones.

I`m waiting for this version........:)

This thread has turned to garbage, thanks for the edit Kev.

So did anyone win the lottery jackpot?

Did you not take the hint that a further hijack will be also be removed, if you have nothing constructive to say about the CQB series, don't, unless you're pulling a Potatoe trying to boost your post count.

Back on topic, could anyone strip a FAMAE SAF, I'd love to see how it compares (especially the bolt group).

got a question for CQB owners on the board,
Black furniture vs Green furniture..
is it pretty much your 'luck' what colour of furniture you end up with
depending on batches shipped to retailers?
which one is preferred by majority? %? I mostly see green.

Jun, both colors are cool and the majority of CQBs seem to be in OD thus far..

I've been told that new ones are coming in with Black furniture ... i'll be getting one of those

I prefer the OD, standard Swiss Army colour. For any accessories, I'd agree that black would look better, since most rails and optics are finished in black. I'm not sure if TSE has seperate furniture available but you can import them from Switzerland (gunfactory.ch), they ship to the US and Canada.

Nice !!! What kind of stock is that, or did you add something onto it?

That's a SIG cheek riser that mounts to the factory stock.
