Well i've had this rifle for a couple years and shoot it fairly often , never shot corrosive obviously ,round count about 2000 .. I noticed the last time i did a full cleaning the gas tube was badly pitted? i never put the rifle away wet before, it has sat dirty in a safe before for a month at most. Could this be defective corrosion treating of the gas tube? or should i clean the gas tube every time after shooting? Was not expecting this on a Swiss , the rifle still functions fine , just wondering if it will affect accuracy im guessing not much? Has this happened to anybody?

The gas tube will rust if moisture is present and it's not properly oiled. It should not affect accuracy. The best solution is to make sure if you plan on not cleaning regularly that you oil it up nice before you put it away. I have always been a more oil is good kind of guy so it's been easy for me. I have put my SAN away for the night wet more than once while out in the bush and never had an issue with the gas tube rusting, but I have heard of it happening quite easily if the tube isn't well oiled.

Moisture, sweat from your hands, corrosive ammo are all rust causing. Like SJ says lightly oil it for rust protection. Eezox is the best for the exterior. Wipeout foam cleaner likely the best for the interior of the tube, wipeout is effective at cleaning out the carbon and leaving behind a dry protective cost that reduces carbon buildup.

The most rust I have seen came from condensation from taking the rifle In and out of the cold. One gas tube missed the lube program and rusted quickly. Not a big deal. Scrub the rust off add a protective coating and carry on.

Sweat from hands is a big one. I did 24km over a day and a night about 2 summers ago. The Sweat from my hand wept down the exterior and onto the bolt. The area of the bolt that had laser etched numbers rusted, and the areas of the bolt that had finish rubbed off from use had some spot rusting, a few drops got to the gas tube, and did the same thing, all the rust spots polished off that morning right there in the bush during field cleaning, I then made sure the areas in question had liberal oil for the rest of the hike home and in the future. It hasn't happened again since.

Clean up the rust, oil accordingly, and it will be fine and shouldn't happen again. Also, if planning on a long term storage of the rifle, even if you don't "clean" it, at least oil it before putting it away for months on end.

Yea i had a parkerized 870 on my back on a hot day guess the gun got sweat all over it ., put the gun away for a few days and it was brown not black anymore LOL... Just outa curiosity how much is a new gas tube? funny thats the only thing that rusted, the piston, bolt and bore were completely fine, the gas tube should be chromed for the price of the rifle , i left my Tavor much longer without cleaning even wet , no rust anywhere on it ... whats the best dealer to get replacement parts?shooters edge?

The Calgary Shooting Centre is the Canadian Authorized Service Centre for Swiss Arms. Marcus is the man, lots of parts in stock there.
