OK I have a classic green and love it much much more than my AR but I need a shorty cqb gun and I was looking at the swiss CQB but I herd some bad reports from some guys at my range last night about the cqb version but they are far from what I would call black rifle experts, now had they giving me advice on a O-U shotgun then Id believe them....

What do you Pro's think???? is the CQB as GOOD OR BETTER THEN THE FULL SIZE??? any info I should know about it before buying???

Thanks CGN'ers

I have only shot the rifle and carbine recreationally (only approx 2000 rds), but have had no reliability issues in the few years I've owned mine. Excellent out ofthe box accuracy.

As for the CQB, you should be fine using as a sport shooter in the North American enviroment/climate.

As for the CQB reliability, I can only pass on an experience I had when talking to a professional bodyguard while overseas. They (he) thought highly of the rifles/carbines but the CQB wasn't totally reliable in a desert enviroment. A second hand observation obviously, but this is all I've ever heard on this issue.

The CQB has a different bolt carrier/gas rod design then the other models due to its barrel length and lack of space for the gas rod and spring. Their work around design unfortunately has not lived up to its Swiss namesake. A bunch of CQB's used in Iraq with a contracting company had their bolt carriers (along with the spring and spring rod) fail (I think Big Red, a member here, was there when this happened). What exactly caused the failures and in what order has never been made clear. The one's used in Iraq were SG552 ( ie full auto version) however some SA version ones in Finland also failed so it's not a FA issue per say, other then it might be accelerating the issue. ;)

SAN redesigned the innards and released it as the SG553. I'm not sure if the new CQB's sold in Canada have the redesign. Apparently it can drop in the current CQB as well if someone wanted to upgrade. I remember someone from TSE posting that the new bits would cost around $600 but I have never seen it for sale.

I have never heard of one failing in Canada and some have posted firing over 5000rds. I've had one for 4 years and have considered selling it a few times but every time I back off because I love it so much. It is the best pointing and most accurate short barreled rifle I have ever owned or fired. And it's more accurate out to 300m then some longer barreled AR's I have owned or fired.:D

If it ever failed I would likely just buy the upgrade and keep on trucking. :)

My CQB has in excess of 5000 rounds through it with ZERO malfunctions! Admittedly not many rounds compared to military usage but for a sport shooter I think you will have a hard time wearing it out in a lifetime. It is the most accurate, fun to shoot carbine I have ever used (and I've shot lots!)! I will never part with mine!

Story is that the 552 breaks extractor at 8000 to 10,000 rounds.....again, it is 3rd party hearsay but I doubt many (if not any) civilian user had reached that round count in Canada

I've got the fullsized version. If you already have a SAN and want a CQB-type rig then I would always suggest going with the same platform. Keeps your muscle memory correct between weapons.

Has any civilian CQB owner on these boards ever had a single malfunction with a CQB?

Now, just relax and let the sound of crickets chirping lull you to sleep.

It depends on what your planning on doing with it. If your shooting under 100 yards and don't hunt; than the CQB might be for you.

If you hunt or shoot on crown land, shoot over 100 yards, than you might want to full size. Either way you can't go wrong.

sig made short version of 551 before release of 552. don't know why they changed the wrap-around spring to ak-style in SG 552.

I've got all three variants...Black Special, Carbine (14") and the CQB.
No issues with any of them...but the one that gets the most use, and provides the most positive feedback at the range is....wait for it....the CQB.
Light, handy, accurate....what's not to like?
The full size is too large...the carbine is heavier.. the CQB is like wielding a rapier as opposed a cutlass....
I'm seriously considering selling my Black Special as I almost never shoot it.
I realize it's non-restricted, but I always shoot at a range anyway.......
I made the mistake of selling my CQB once....I won't repeat the error!

I have a full size already I just want a CQB gun I think the whole muscle memory is a good thing and I would love to have two guns with the same mags..... How can I tell if the CQB has new parts or old ones????

There was a upgrade way back for the CQB a nylon guide rod instead of the metal one,I guess if it ever bound up the new guide rod would flex and not casue any damage.

One thing I thought was lame about the CQB was when you separate the upper from lower the guide rod would go flying if you didnt hold it.

I think I still have a extra one, I like CQB but love the carbine more.

I have the Black Special, the Carbine and the CQB and none of them have ever malfunctioned. I suppose the only disadvantage over an AR-15 is the 5rnd magazine capacity. However, I found the shorter the barrel on the AR-15, the more FTF & FTE I experience. Swiss Arms are bomb-proof.
