The Swiss are holding a nation-wide referendum on Nov. 29th 2009 regarding Swiss Arms Exports. If this ban is approved by the Swiss and gets a majority vote, it is binding and no more Swiss Arms may be exported.

Here's a couple links:

This would really suck as the Swiss Arms is a neat rifle. I am not 100% sure that it will effect small custom runs, but this seems like a general ban...

WTF.

I had heard that the Swiss Gov. seemed to be going even more liberal as of late (more referring to Mil. issued ammo to go with their rifle's) but I thought it was just some hooey.

That would suck a lot of they stopped export of them, they are beautiful rifle's, both functionally and aesthetically!

Lets hope that making extra money is too tempting for the swiss to resist! Swiss Arms is one of the few companies that pretty much tailor makes rifle's for the Canadian Market :D

I would hope that there would some demarcation between civilian rifles, semi auto stuff that ends up in Canada, and anti aircraft systems that end up in Iran....

The GSoA was founded in 1982, with the main goal of "civilizing" Swiss society by abolishing its army.

Yay. Switzerland without an army. Are they idiots? From the site "War Resisters International". Sounds like just another hippie site. Guess all wars are about oil. Maybe when they lose their army they'll be convinced otherwise.

The vote was started by a group called "Gruppe fĂĽr eine Schweiz ohne Armee - GSoA" in english: "Group for a Switzerland without an army"

The morons have about as much common-sense as a brick.
It's not their first try to get rid of the army and the tradition of taking home the service rifle.

If the thing really gets through, then no weapon whatsoever can be exported, this includes sporting rifles, too.

My guess is, that it'll be rejected, the majority of the people is stil smart enough

Meh. Screw them.

Whenever a vacuum arises in the free market, somebody else moves in to fill it. The ACR is waiting in the wings, or maybe another excellent design like the Tavor will come along. You guys that have these Swiss rifles will see their value jump like crazy and collectors will fall over themselves to throw money at you in order to take them off your hands.

Everyone wins in a free market except socialists, liberals and other losers.

Switzerland allows public votes on referendums and constitutional ammendments on laws if they get enough signatures.
The result is that any reasonably sized lobby organization can force an issue to a national vote. It isn't indicative of the popular opinion.

Lets just all hope common sense prevails and less than 50% of the Swiss think this is a good idea. Too bad I didn't have the money for one of those Swiss Arms. It would be a good investment piece right about now. Even if it didn;t go through I don't think I'd mind having one around.

I agree that the Swiss will put anything to a vote. But I also believe that the Swiss also like money and they like their firearms. So I don't think this will pass.

The Swiss are incredibly proud of their armed forces and their heritage as a neutral nation that can and will fight to defend their territory if needs be.

While the GSOA might have been able to initiate a referendum, you have to remember that their are a LOT of people with service rifle sitting in their houses and that the Swiss arms industry is a good part of the Swiss GDP.

It is unlikely that a country with a rich military heritage and pride in the arms industry would see this referendum through. What is amusing is how many organizations and people the world over feel the military is a waste of time and money until you have a natural disaster, an invasion, or worse tyranny.

While I can understand wanting to get rid of certain world militaries like the DRC and Zimbabwe, the Swiss have the best military format the world over. Neutral, widely distributed, good equipment and training, and there when you need them.

So in conclusion, getting rid of their military would be ridiculous and unlikely to ever happen and banning export of arms would kill their arms industries, reduce their GDP and hurt their country. Its possible but its not probable.
