Swiss Arms now or wait for FAMAE

You've got to ask yourself... Do you feel lucky?

The swissarms is hanging on by a tread, don't know that I'd want to gamble on one right now.

I sold my swissarms a few years ago in anticipation of the SPAR comming in, that is a bust but an SG542 should scratch that itch for me. I don't care if it is TI or ERE that gets if for me but TI is looking schetchy to me at this point, no FRT and saying their sample rifle was chormelined when Famae doesn't make chormelined barrels. ERE has photos and updates posted, if they get it here before TI then a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush as they say.

Swiss Arms... a no brainer. I absolutely love mine.
Nothing will happen to it, meaning it will still be perfectly legal to keep in the long future to come however no more will be imported. This will inevitability drive the prices up, just like what happened in the states with their PE90/STGW 90's!
You will never regret the purchase of the Swiss & would be taking a risk on the quality of the FAMAE SG542.

If you don't buy it, send me a PM for the sellers contact info & I will send you $ for a finders fee...

Hummm -

The real question is if you're willing to settle for less.

The Chilean Famae 542 is an early 540 design licensed out by SIG (Swiss Arms) - the Chileans never changed / upgraded their design or production line.

The Swiss Arms Black Specials / Classic Greens are built of the FINAL incarnation of the 540 (just the first mandril of the 540 production line is used - the Bolt, Bolt Carrier, Barrel, Gas System, and furniture is off the 55x production line).

The final version of the 540 receiver mandril is virtually identical to the 55x (the three rnd bulge on the 55x rifles are produced using a second mandril, the different internals of the 55x line is created by a sleeve fitted / soldered, then welded into place).

Soooo - do ya really want to purchase a new 'old' rifle?

=TV-PressPass;9524804]My wishful answer is both!

Swiss Arms for .223, and FAMAE for .308 ;)[/QUOTE]

I would love that option

Yah to me the 540 makes no sense. The swiss rifles are superior in almost every way, and will cost about the same.

The appeal to me is in the 542... but if Swiss Arms made a .308 version, I'd never even LOOK at the 542.

Here the important thing is the caliber, 223 while a great caliber in it's intended role if compare to the 308 is really at the rear of the traffic... If i have the choice i have no use for the 223, i can do much more with the 308... The FAMAE shine for that... JP.

For me (having multiple Swiss Arms) the interest in the 540 has more to do with the history and development of the platform, rather than just how functional the rifle is.

That said, the 540 was a very well designed rifle, and FAMAE certainly does seem to do justice to the Swiss legacy of quality manufacturing. It's something a little different than the Swiss Arms, is Non-Restricted and is available in .223 (540) and .308 (542), so IMO they definitely have their place here.

How is it getting magazines for these?

The only place I can see selling them is Wolverine at $89 for 20 rounders and $106 for 30 rounders.

Well there is another place to buy the 5/20 mags for $60 ea (click here).

The thing with the review that happened 6 months ago, is that once complete if found that the classification stays the same the RCMP don't have to make a public service announcement about it, in that case the FRT stays the same. Like Steve Janes said in another thread the longer they can keep up the "review" or even the appearance of a review the longer the next import of rifles will be held back and the rifle in the eyes of a few is "off of the street".

A person can only make decisions off of the information that's available. The current information points that if the review were going to change the classification to prohibited then it likely would have happened already. The fact that the FRT still exists at the moment points to the classification staying the same.

Honestly if no public service announcement is made by the RCMP tech lab, but the classification is the same and operates under the same FRT, I wonder if people will still be banging the reclassification drum two years from now ;).

Now I need to figure out what to feed it. Obviously I'll pick up a case of Norinco for plinking.

The PMC X-Tac 62gr 5.56 stuff seems well priced and a cursory look at reviews seems positive.
