I'm just starting to shoot my Black Special and I've tossed a 100$ UTG scope on it. Problem is that the MilDot reticles centre dot is WAY bigger than my groups at 100m and it's impossible to get a repeatable point of aim out to 200. With about a 1k limit in mind what would the community at large suggest?

Thx

Mike

Depending on the use of the gun (hunting or target shooting), I would settle somewhere between a 3.5-10x40 to a 6.5-20x40ish. Mine is wearing a Leupold VX-III 4.4-14x40 Long Range right now, primary purpose to be hunting coyotes. If you want to spend less, you could look at something like the Bushnell Elite 4200 or 6500 (the 6500 2.5-16x42 mildot would be a nice fit) or the 4200 6-24x40 mildot if you needed more magnification.

If you are going shorter range, something like the Nightforce 1-4x24 or 2.5-10x24 would work very well, and if purchased used would be somewhere near your $1k price limit.

Don't forget that good rings are needed ($50-$200).

I think the NF 2.5-10x24 with the NP-1 reticle is the absolute perfect optic for your SAN. Low profile, so it looks great on the gun, will give you cqb capabilities and still great out to 300M, which is about the limit of what you want to be shooting the gun anyhow. Any bushnell or leupold or millet or burris in the magnification of your choice would be absolutlely satisfactory but the NF really is perfect. you should be able to find one used for around 1K. I had the Leupold Mark 4 4.5-14x50 on mine...too much optic and then tried the NF 1-4x24,not enough, now waiting for the 2.5-10x24. Put the 1-4x24 on the carbine (perfect)

I mounted a Leupold Mark 4 MR/T, 3-9x36, with an illuminated reticle on mine. I thought it was an ideal match:

UW. nice setup. like you.. I think that power range is really perfect for the rifle. and the smaller bells fit the rifle better than the 50mm's.
