Swiss arms / SAN rifles FAQ

I want a Black Special 20" barrel model really bad. Where can one get one of these, I've only seen one for sale in Canada if they still have it, some shop out East I think?

Woohoo, just got myself what looked like the last new Black Special in Canada from E. Epps... Anyway, needless to say I'm stoked but I wanted to say thanks to everyone who has taken part in this thread. The information and pictures were invaluable in not only my choosing to buy this but to educate mmyself enough to do it online. Cheers everyone!

I would like to order a 3cm Buttstock Extension from Waffen-Hiendlmayer GmbH for my Black Special (among other things).

It recommends on their site that it is recommended this be installed in house (in Germany).

Does anyone have experience with these, is it something someone can do at home or is there any way I can get this properly installed by a professional if necessary, hopefully on the West Coast? Would Shane at Reliable Gun be able to do this if I can't, for instance?

Thanks very much for any comments.

Best regards

Sorry for the stupid question but I want to hear from people who know more about this rifle than I do:

Is there ANY issue with leaving the action open (and the hammer cocked) on this rifle for an extended period (1 year)?

I feel like an idiot, but I had inadvertently left my rifle in this condition in the gun safe without realizing. Hadn't touched it in about year. It may be my imagination, but the hammer strike "sounds" weak.

Just looking for some reassurance. Thanks.

Springs don't wear from being compressed or relaxed, it's repetitive cycling what wears them.
Can't see any problem here.

But hell, you didn't touch your sweethaert for a year? Shame on you.

Not a stupid question, there is NO issue with leaving the action open and hammer cocked for one year or years! Like was mentioned before springs wear from cycling not compression.

You can easily disassemble the upper from the lower, take out the bolt carrier group, take out the firing pin (you will need a little something stiff to push out a little pin, and you will need do compress the firing pin at the same time you push out the pin) inspect it to ensure no lubricant has gummed up. You can re-lube the firing pin spring with light oil like Ezzox which will protect it agains corrosion, also light lube the firing pin, reassemble and you should then hear what you used to. Its really and easy task, take pictures along the way if you are concerned about not knowing how to put it back together.

Don't worry. The rifle was made to withstand way more abuse than that by ignorant soldiers who do not care for their rifle for extended periods of time ;)

Now go out and shoot your rifle more often ;)

Which type(s) of grease, aside from the stuff that comes with the gun, do you guys use? There's specs posted on the Swiss board but I have no idea how that translates into a type of grease we can buy here. Any help much appreciated, thanks.

I have only ever run Breakfree CLP and never had an issue. I clean the piston tubes with wipeout bore spray foam cleaner and it cleans them (hardened carbon and all) with very little scrubbing.

There are lots of lubes that work Breakfree is great as it clean lubes and is likely the second best rust inhibitor only to Ezzox

Thanks dizzy. Is G96 roughly the same animal or not? Thanks for the gas tube tricks too. The little tube of grease that came with my rifle looks hokey and I'm trying to get a few things from Waffen Hiendlmayer right now, including swiss grease so just curious. Oil would seem to be a lot easier to use and maintain than grease if it sufficiently lubricates the races the bolt carrier rides on, etc. Thanks again!

Where do you guys who run a solid 2 point sling like the bfg vcas attach the front point on the full length rifle? I'm thinking either a hand guard strap (not really ideal) or i might use the rail mounted into the handguard heat vents to attach a sling mount. (see link for what i am talking about http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?673668-Swiss-Arms-Cheap-Handguard-Rail)

How is yours rigged?
kampfhamster, steve janes, j996?

I wouldn't put a sling mount on that rail, I don't think the hardware is biting enough plastic to make a strong enough connection for a sling. I bought the same hand guard mounted rail as you, based on your suggestion actually. Then I realized the one I got was grossly out of spec, so I got a plastic magpul one and mounted it using the same hardware that came with the old out of spec rail. If I mounted a sling to it, I would be afraid that when you used the sling hard (like pulled on it to hard) you may break the hand guard where the rail hardware mounts to it.

I just got a new sling from DS tactical, so far, I really like it, it's by Grey Ghost but Tactical tailor just took it over so for now it's being marketed as Grey Ghost but soon to change to Tactical Tailor, it's a Padded 2-point adjustable style bungee sling. Very easy to shoulder even when snug around the back, as the bungee stretches out and actually pulls the rifle in tighter to your shoulder.

There is bungee in more than just one spot, both ends of the sling have some very heavy duty elastic in them. The red arrows show where stretchy area are. At first glance you think it's just the visible "bungee" area, but the strap itself actually has elasticity, the only part that doesn't stretch is the adjustable area. I just use the standard sling hook up front, I've meant to change it to an H&K style sling hook for years but never got around to it.

I know that hand guard rail is good as an index point and a light mount maybe but your right I don't want to mount my sling on it.
I have a BFg vcas inbound from onshottactical I was hoping to mount to butt stock and somewhere forward of the receiver but hopefully not all the way out to the gas block. I like the look of that sling and if I handnt already purchased the vcas I might consider it, (although I'm not sure I'm sold on a bungee sling other than for something mp5 size). I geuss ill have to see if it is long enough to go from buttstock to gas lock and whether or not I like the way it hangs. Ideally I' just sack up and drill a proper rail mount into my handguard ( in a beefy area) an do that. But with the price of SAN furniture I couldn't do it. Any thoughts on a handguard strap ala m16a2 style?

I thought the idea of a bungee sling was a horrible idea until I tried this, the bungee is extremely stiff, almost un-noticable until you pull on it.

As far as a hand guard strap, I have thought if it many times and never come up with something that wasn't hokey.

Fair enough, well I geuss I'm gonna screw around with the vcas to see what I can come up with once it arrives. Hopefully there is enough length to it to run butt-gas block. I might try running one of the BFg universal sling mount (coated aircraft cable loop) run through the handguards some how. What do u run on that magpul rail? Do u have white light?

I have a NOVA Tac SPL-120 Army Weapons Light Kit, I carry it in a small pouch on my chest rig, but only mount it when required, it is qd so only takes a second. For the picture, I attached the pressure switch with some electrical tape, just so I didn't waste the pre-cut sticky velcro things that would keep it attached a lot better.

I stumbled upon it on ebay one day when looking for a light weight light package. Comes included with mount, pressure switch, regular tail cap button, filter's, batteries, everything. I couldn't find one in North America that would ship to Canada so it cam from Italy I think.

Buy some surplus HK 91 sling hooks and use them. That way you can use the rings on the stock and receiver. The rings work for 600,000+++ swiss user's and their slings. I use the israeli slings and various us m16 slings and the sling hooks work.

Maybe it works for them, maybe a portion of that 600k want something That works better ? No harm in asking what others may have come up with, and I'm not fond of the receiver to buttstock mount as I can't use it as an aid for support offhand also it doesn't support the rifle all that well when slung with the 21" barrelled rifles
