Swiss K11 or K31

K11 or K31

Hi,

The Swiss straight pull rifles evolved with respect to the bolt design even though they look similar externally.

The fist versions 1989 had the locking lugs on the "bolt carrier", not the bolt itself. Weakest Desgin.

The K11 located the locking lugs on the "rear" of the bolt. Better Design.

The K31 located the locking lugs on the "front" of the bolt. Best design.

If you want one to shoot, the K11 or K31 os OK, with the K31 being the better choice. I would leave the 1891 for use as a study piece and a "wall hanger".

Cheers !!!!!!

TradeEx sells 7.5x55 Swiss brass, as does MysticPlayer. The bullets are .308 if I remember correctly and the appropriate primers and powder wouldn't be hard to find. I'm not sure where You'd find dies though...

K31 > K11

K11 is less cluby than the k31, but has a thinner barrel and you cannot use the clamp-on accessories the K31 does.

K31 was developed because the troops liked the handiness of the K11, but needed better accuracy over a sustained firing period.

Lee makes 7.5x55 dies....

I have the 7.5x55 die sets from Lee, Hornady(both from Higginson) and RCBS(Tradex).
.284 brass from Higginson.
7.5x55 Privi Partisan(Boxer primer) from Tradex.
GP11 brass from my Swiss Rifle Club and Berdan primers for the GP11 brass from North Sylva.

The Shooters Edge has a nice price for the GP11. It's slightly cheaper than our Club price.

They're a fun, accurate rifle. Once a year i get to shoot my brother's K31 at the Vancouver Swiss Club's Schutzenfest. Diopter, were you there this year? I'd hate to think I missed meeting you!

I'd sooner order Lee because of price but I've been told that RCBS dies are the only dies which properly size the entire length of a 7.5x55 case for use in the K31. What say ye diopter?

The price of brass and dies are the only thing keeping me from getting a K31 :(

I prefer the Hornady dies, but they are more expensive.

Others work fine within their limits. The Lee are OK if you change the lock ring.

RCBS can be a pain if you get a stuck case.

RCBS and Redding makes both versions, not worth worrying about, IMHO, unless you have a $,$$$.$$ 1/4 m.o.a. Match Bolt Action rifle in 7.5x55 that you have to feed.

Hoping to get a Redding Competition die set one day in the caliber.

If I remember correctly, the lee dies are cut for the K11 chambers while the RCBS/Hornady are made for the K31... You can use the Lee dies in your K31, but the full lenght resize will put more stress on your brass since the K11 chamber is somewhat tighter...

Cost of component is actullay not that bad, and I haven't had any problem with just doing a neck sizing on my brass...

That must have been why I was thinking Lee dies were inadequate. I dread spending $50 on a set of RCBS dies, perhaps I'm just used to economically-priced Lee dies ha ha.

Optimistically, the quality of manufacture and accuracy of the rifle make it a bargain at less than $300 so I suppose that spending $100ish on a set of dies and a small pile of brass still makes it a bargain!

Ah no!

RCBS dies resize to the factory spec for a GP11 cartridge. Measure a resized case and a factory GP11 round and they spec about the same. Redding dies resize about .010" bigger for the K31 chamber. A lot less effort to resize with the Redding dies, but they are no good if you own a K11.

K31 is a great rifle. The cost of brass is no big deal. I bought 300 new nny cases, I'm running 150 of them, shot over 700 rounds with them, only lost 1 case due to a split.

The cost of my 7.5X55 RCBS dies were no worse then any other caliber I have bought.
