Well it is very very easy to pull the firing pin out so you could do that with no problem, just in case. All you have to do is pull the bolt out then unscrew the big nut on the back of the bolt. Pull out the spring and such and the firing pin will come out the side. It is a 2 prong looking thing. The just reassemble the bolt. Just remember to keep the firing pin in a safe place so you don't lose it.
 
It's prescribed antique in rimfire but becomes a firearm if converted to center fire.

True, but I just meant there is still a way for him to get use out of the firearm if his main reason for not shooting it is because he can no longer find the rimfire ammo. But if he doesn't want to shoot it, then yes, leave it as is. That being said, it can easily be converted back to rimfire.
