Just brought home a newly chambered barrel...308 Win - Krieger 13 twist / tight bore (.298) standard Palma contour. Barnard SM action / Jewel trigger / HS bottom metal / Robertson Hunter stock.

Initial groups after break-in. Break-in groups were all sub 1/2MOA with 155 Berger VLD, but I ran out so switched to 168's. Will do some load development with the 168's and get some 155's when I get to town. Chamber is designed for the 155's. All 5 shot groups at 100M. Varget / CCI-BR-2 primers. It was a bit windy today here in Alberta!

Very nice. I hadn't considered the use of a torque wrench for assembly and assumed index marks on the barrel and action would be sufficient. I'm slowly acquiring the components to build a switch barrel, but mine will be based on a long action 700, with interchangeable bolts to swap between magnum and standard cartridges, and I might even try to get a third custom bolt body built for .223 sized cartridges. At this stage the rifle I've envisioned would be built around the 700 action, with medium weight sporter barrels, and a McMillan stock, but that's about as far as I've got.

Maynard- above groups are with 168's. I started low on the powder because they are seated deep, and I wasn't sure what to expect pressure wise with the tight bore. The 155's that I used for the break-in showed no pressure with 45.5 Varget.
Boomer - Regarding actions for a build, don't discount the Stiller Predator (Rem 700 compatible with a longer magazine cut-out so can get an extended box to seat bullets longer)...or a the Barnard SM (The SM is not very compatable to Rem stocks, so it means pretty much everything custom, but if you are doing that anyways...Barnard tolerances are among the tightest made.)
Also, when using the "sandwich style" recoil lug on a switch barrel, it makes things a lot easier if you have the lug pinned to the action to insure it sits the same place in the lug pocket.
I use 40 ft/lbs torque.

Just about everyone that shoots a .308 with 155's and Varget will tell you their load is 46.0 gr. I think the Krieger that is on my rifle right now is a .298"-.307".
