Switzerland is tightening the rules under which service members can keep their firearm once they leave military duty.
In 2007, around 23% of retiring service members took advantage of the possibility. That’s down from 43% in 2004, largely because service members, since 2005, have to shoulder a larger part of the cost.
Under a new law, service members now will have to undergo four drills during the last three years of service. Two of those have to be firings in the field, with two others as part of exercises. That’s up from the current requirement, which calls for participation in only two drills. The new rule takes effect starting 2010.
The government is still working through some aspects of the rules governing the weapons issue, which will then go to parliament for formal review."
