What have they done to improve the SX3 over the older models or are the early versions a better value? Anything new and improved for 2011?

Browning keeps changing auto designs every few years while Beretta improoves on a prooven system. Every single Browning auto after the Auto5, never worked for all types of shooting. The SX1 did not work. The SX2 worked part time and now the SX3, we will see in 2 to 4 years.

Meanwhile my 391 Optima Gold Sporting Beretta has not been cleanned since 2003. It shoots nearly a thousand dirty hunting loads each fall and a few hundred target loads during the winter. It only gets a few splashes of BreakFree to keep it running.

When I did a test report for The Clay Pigeon, over a good number of years on my 390 Gold Sporting, it only started to hickup November 13 2004 with 25,024rounds of NO cleanning and in that time 20 Failure to Feed.

Henry;)

Then the sx1 is out, so you are left with the sx2 or x3. I have two sx2 and three browning gold , 2 12ga and one 10ga which is the same gun basically I am not sure what ones Henry used in his feedback to say the sx2 works some time. Mine work every time but I also totally clean them after every hunt .I have seen these never cleaned Beretta's try to work during my guiding days.
Geese love them.
Bottom line I don't think you can go wrong with either a x2 or a x3. Some will say they will not cycle light loads. Again I shoot some of mine with 1 oz light reloads and have no issue and use the same gun that night with 3 1/2 " on geese.

The SX-1 was not made by Browning it was made by Winchester, probably their last hand made Shotgun. With quality of parts and machining not found on the guns of today including your Beretta and also Benelli's.

To the OP for all around shooting if I were you I would pick up a 28" SX-3. If you were shooting only Clays I would suggest a lightly used SX-1. As they are heavier and swing better.

Yup your right, the SX1 was made by Winchester and used many forged parts and thus became to expensive for Winchester to produce. The only 300 series of Beretta's that I have seen not to cycle properly, are those that are too clean and have not sufficient lubrication. The main culprit is the return spring. It is made of spring steel and sits in a chrome moly tube. The spring gets crude from powder residue but worst is if it gets wet. It rusts! Our club has some 35 loaner guns. The Berettas 300s all work when others stop. From the 390 on, one can shoot interchangeably light clay loads and heavy game loads.

The OP wanted info on the SX-1 2 & 3 not how much you torture tested a "Beretta" for some obscure Magazine. :)
Yes I agree the Beretta's are nice guns. But as far as price goes the Browning's and Winchesters are absolute bargains.

Here is what I was told by the Win experts when I was looking to buy a x3. I decided to save 300.00 and bought another x2 at the time.

They are pretty much the same gun with a few differences. The SX3 is lighter in weight due to the alloy magazine and recoil tubes. The rib design is also lighter and lower (mid vs tall) that comes from the Browning Gold Fusion. The barrel is lighter and uses a thinner forearm. The SX3 has more adjustments for the stock with shims for drop and cast (synthetic models) as well as LOP spacers. The style of the SX3 is more modern than that of the SX2. The SX2 has a more netural balance point to the SX3 which puts a little more towards the stock

I have had my eye on the SX3 for the last two years and almost bought one last week. My friend has one and he loves it and most of the reviews seem very positive. Some 3.5 guns have problems cycling the lightest target loads but I don't think that's just an SX3 issue. However it is something to keep in mind.

The one thing that stopped me from ordering the Winny is the new Browning Maxus. It's very similar to the SX3 as both are made by Browning but the Maxus has a magazine cutoff, speedload, new gas piston, and some other bells and whistles over the SX3. For an extra 200 it's worth checking out. Pretty new gun so not a ton of reviews yet.

The SX3 (Winchester) is stellar. I "think" Winchester is owned by Browning.

The action in the SX3 is made by FN, so you know it's rock solid!

Great gun!!

I have the 3.5" SX3 and love it but I fondled a Browning Maxus and it fits me better out of the box than the SX3 did but check out both!
