SXP Ejection Problems

Hi folks,

I bought an SXP off CGN a while ago and it’s been great for trap and skeet. Always ejects 2.75” shells.

However, when I’m hunting, and using 3” shells, they almost always fail to eject. This happens with all the brands I’ve tried (Winchester, Kent, Federal Black Cloud, Hevi Shot.

I took the gun completely apart, gave it a clean and an oil, didn’t see any obvious problems. But it made no difference.

My friends think my ejection port is too small, and I’m considering taking a dremel to open it up a hair. My only hesitation is messing it all up. I bought the gun cheap so that’s not a huge issue.

Does anyone have any better suggestions or advice? Anyone experienced this before?

Thanks,

The port will NOT be the issue. Your ejector is not travelling far enough back to allow the longer 3" cartridge to be ejected. Take the gun down. Remove the bolt. Now look at the ejector. It will have a small coil spring over the rear end and retained by a screw and plate affair. Move the ejector back and forth and see what is preventing it from travelling properly.

I’ve heard of a fair number of people for whom this is a problem. I know dirt can’t be the problem for me as I’ve totally cleaned the thing. But I’m gonna take a look at that ejector/spring again when I get home from work. Thanks Darryl. Let’s see if I can get to the bottom of this. It’s been really messing up my hunting season.

IIRC there is a corresponding hole drilled at the rear of the receiver where the ejector tip "plunges" into. Sometimes this hole becomes full of stuff and prevents the ejector from travelling properly. Keep us posted. We should be able to get it going for you.

Mine did this with the first shells out of the box.
A "clean" brand new gun.
Maybe it just needs breaking in?

Ok so I took everything apart, there was definitely some gunk back behind the ejector. One of the coils on the spring was very slightly raised compared to the others. Tried to bend it back. Everything’s cleaned now so hopefully it’ll work as expected. Will report back after this weekend hunting. Fingers crossed I don’t have to hunt as if I’ve got a single shot anymore.

I’ve noticed when the forend’s pushed back (along with the extractor/firing pin) there’s still a little more I can push the extractor back. Is this a problem? Should the extractor be going all the way back (i.e. have no room for me to push it when the foreend’s pushed all the way back).

Check the Magazine Throat. This is the plastic part that holds the magazine tube by the receiver. I saw several posting from several forums noting a cracked part of this part creating feeding and ejection issues. Look closely for a cracked part. Google for pictures. The magazine throat is polymer, and if installed forcibly during the assembly process, it could crack. Looks like an easy fix if your shotgun is just out of warranty.

I don’t have any feeding issues, but I opened the gun up and checked for cracks along the magazine throat. Doesn’t seem like there’s any cracks there. I feel like it’s either the ejector, or the extractor not moving far enough back.

I love the smooth action of the gun, and with 2.75 it’s awesome. Just annoying with the 3s. I wonder if it’s a quality control thing, as some people’s are flawless and others have this similar problem (my buddy’s run into it to, although more occasionally).

Do you guys think the ejection port is objectively small? Like obviously it’s made to eject 3 inch shells, but when I compare it to my friends’ shotguns, their ports are way bigger. Getting port-envy lol

Try another ammo. Sometimes, a slight dimensional difference creates this issue on some firearms. I have not used a 3” round on mine.

The barrel states that the gun takes 2.75 and 3 inch shells. Feeds 3 inch no problem, extracts no problem either, but there doesn’t seem to be enough space between the extractor and the front of the ejection port to actually chuck them. It’s possible that even with the limited space of the ejection port the ejector when functioning properly could push it out, or it’s possible that the extractor isn’t pulling the shells far enough back, or that the ejection port is just milled too short. Gonna see if a cleaning of the ejector amd ejection spring changes anything.

And as far as ammo goes, as I said, I’ve tried like 4 and each do the same thing.

After a thorough clean, bit of bending of the ejector and straightening of the ejector spring it worked much better. BUT I still got one or two jams. I kept my empties and they cycled through fine when I manually pumped it hard but I think the fact that the SXP foreend automatically moves back (perhaps not at enough force) could be contributing. At this point I don’t know what to do other than shave off like 1/16 of an inch off the ejection port.
