X2, there is likely no reason that it cannot be fixed and made safe once again.
i would contact the previous owner though, and get him to pay for the repair.
This doesn't sound like it "just started".

I agree, I would like to see it repaired.
I also agree that it is strange and unlikely to have just developed, although it was not reported used very much if at all. He tested it out apparently and everything was ok...?
Anyway, I've pm'd him yesterday and I'll give him a fair chance to respond as he may be busy.

Sounds like a FEG. The diagram you show is an Anson and Deeley boxlock, same as on my English SxS. Its one of the better designs ever made but does take some skill to properly execute and tune.
Your diagram doesn't show the safety mechanism, but it works by blocking the trigger from lifting the sear. That said, I have no idea if your gun is an Anson and Deeley boxlock, but most are variations on its theme.
I think the gun should be fine once a decent gunsmith has a look at it.

I don't know anything about this shotgun other than the little I found on the internet prior to purchasing it.
I don't know if the diagram I posted is representative of this shotgun. I just posted it as it is a boxlock variation.
e.t.a.: Well the seller has replied and assures me it was working 100% (maybe a temperature thing?) I am taking it to my gunsmith to be checked out. Hopefully it can be repaired and certified safe without much work. Thanks all for the input. As stated earlier this is my first experience with this and it scared the sh*t out of me.

hate to drag up an old post.... but
beware any deal with cgn'r "twogun"
My gunsmith recommended returning the shotgun based on potential repair costs and the guns value. He did not open it up, just advised against getting into it. I let "twogun" know, and told him I wanted to return it as per sale agreement.
his response, you probably broke it, I'll pay a small amount towards the repair. I won't take it back!
BUYERS BEWARE, don't deal with this newbie he has had every opportunity to respond and hold up hes end of the sale agreement.
