Just picked up an older SxS shotgun from a fellow and am having trouble determining the manufacturer.

Hopefully I can post some pics when I get home but, on the side of the reciever it has some scroll work around the words "Highest Quality" and it has an E within a diamond. That is all the stamps that I can find other than a serial number under the forend.

Edit - Also found Pat. MAy 23 93 Patents Pendg

Does anyone know who made this SxS?

Thanks,

Sorry to get OT, but is it considered an antique?
I don't know. I don't even know what age it is.

I phoned the CFC today, to transfer the sxs into my name, but they won't do it until they can classify the gun ie. maker etc.

Please if anyone has any info or guesses please let me know. At least then I can get transferred into my name. Even with a guess I can start to do some research on the net.

Thanks,

SS

The diamond E stands for Eaton's unless I am mistaken. It was almost certainly made after 1900 and my guess would be 1930- 1960 but that is a wild guess. If you look on the bottom of the barrels at the breach there is a slight chance the makers name will be stamped. An oval with ELG* if present is a belgian proof mark.

Pssss... Your carpet needs a cleaning ;) nice shotgun though

I was wondering when someone would pick that up. Gun room gets hand me down stained carpet. Doesn't bug me don't have to worry about spilling gun oil or such.

Mooncoon, as soon as I say that E that's what I thought too. Eatons. But have found nothing to help determine it definitivily.

Action locks up really nice, but one of the firing pin springs seems to have broken.

That looks like a "Tobin Arms Mfg" or sometimes called a "Tobin Simplex". I stress "looks like". Any Tobin I have seen has the makers name on it or the word "Tournament". Tobins were made in Woodstock Ontario up to the 20's or 30's. Maybe they did a run for Eatons. Both companies are Canadian.

Try your question here: http://www.gabelguns.com/default.asp My guess is that it is a Belgium made hardware store gun. Eatons could be correct as could Eastern Arms (made for Sears) - hard to say for certain. Are you sure there are no other marks or numbers on the barrel flats or the watertable (flat part of the receiver that the barrel flats sit on when the gun is closed)?

Nope, all says on the watertable is the serial # 18152 and PAT MAY 23 AND PATENTS PEND'G

Damn Dilly I think you got it. I ran the patent date in a search a gabelarms as suggested by Snowdog and several questions and answers popped up that quoted their Tobin Arms shotgun had the May 23 93 stamp.

Just waiting to hear back from doubleguns.com to confirm.

Thank you all.

My Great Grantfather used a Tobin in a live pigeon shoot and shot 99 out of 100 birds. The story goes that he missed the 99th bird when he accidently left the safety on. He got a little medal for his efforts which now belongs to my uncle. My Dad has the gun which incidentally has the safety removed. Also, I read in Sharptails link that they have a weak pistol grip area, Dad's is broken there too. It has been taped up with electrical tape as long as I can remember.
Thanks for the thread. I like these type of mystries and thanks for the link Sharptail.

Ok, so now the question is, can I shoot it?

Did the shotguns of this era shoot 2 3/4" shells or were some 2 1/2"?

One of the firing pins is either broken or the spring is gone, would I be able to source any replacement parts?

I have swung it around some and it really jumps to the shoulder nice. Would I be able to shoot it?

Thanks again for all the help, and thanks for the link Sharptail.
