This is a request to anyone who uses the gravel pits on Sylvester road. The good gravel pit is 7 kms in. It has safe backstops. You can stretch 100 yards safely, and you won't intimidate the general public. Any gravel pit before that does not have adequate backstops. Or the one where you are just throwing clays over the road on the left past Davis, that's not safe. I'm a gun guy and I'm nervous. The good gravel pit is 7 kms in. It's called " little Iraq". We own a cabin behind a gate up there somewhere, I won't say where, but we've had bullets hit stuff close by. It's hard to have pro-gun conversations with people who's house got hit. There's talk of cracking down on shooting on the road network, this is the " one bad apple" story. Let's clean up our act, and clean up our garbage. Remember "little Iraq" is 7 kms in.:shotgun:
 
Good advice, i dont even like taking my dirt bike up there anymore. There are many better quiet places not too far, but my lipsare sealed on that. :p
 
Someone from one of those cabins reported me for shooting machine guns, they cave the RCMP a description of our vehicles, number of persons, atv's and so on. The RCMP had a nice little road block waiting for us, but only one cruiser with 2 officers. One of whom is one of the most gorgeous creatures I've ever seen... Or maybe it was the liquor. Thanks to this idiotic report these cops were quite the douche's at the begining. Even though my guns were in the back, in closed hardcases they were going to write me up for unsafe transport, which peed me off greatly. Then she started asking all sorts of information because she was taking notes that would be on record because of my "aggressive behavior while in possesion of firearms" I explained why I was gettig angry and I asked if I could retrieve the rcmp's trasportation/storage pamphlet from my back pack... They were astonished to see the mountain of empty shotgun hulls and a bag of my fired brass. Then it turned into a scene from super bad. No kidding at all, they dropped all the bs, allowed myself and my girlfriend to have a beer and we talked about everything from the breathalizer training, the amazing solar system to 4x4's for a good hour. One of the most memorable days I'll ever have.
 
I hear ya...my last road trip into sylvester landed getting my truck sprayed with probably trap loads on theway to little iraq. Some door knob with his kids. Can't really say anything on gun etiquette. I did approach him and mentioned that his kids are lacking in muzzle control. He asked if i was RCMP and reminded me that is was crown land....what do you do:sok2

what do you do???!!!??? take is ####in plate number along with pictures and go to the rcmp and then to icbc...SMH.
 
im up sylvester almost every weekend and i hate driving thru the first so called(shooting area) the one about 3kms up right were the road forks and you got everyone fighting for a spot until theres no room and you get the idiots that decide to shoot at the far right into the tree line pretty much inline with the lower road, not too mention the roads and trails behind those trees. and good on you for taking out your shells, drag a rake anywhere up there and youll have a full garbage bag in seconds.
 
I went up there for the first time in several years about a week ago, I always use the 7km pits and I was shocked by what I saw before the pits.... I would not take my family anywhere near there and fully expected the rcmp to show up and shut everyone down.
Ass-clowns, the whole f**king lot.
 
lots of the local 4x4 and atv clubs and forum sites do trail clean up days up sylvester and i encourage anyone that enjoys that area to join in. i enjoy shooting things besides just paper targets but if your going to bring something from your garage take it out when your done.

I agree with your comments about shooting at the fork In the road, and I've never once used that area.
There are a couple of OK spots before the 7 km spot with adequate backstops, but they are less than 100m for sure, and there isn't a lot of room for large groups. "Little Iraq" is the best spot for recreational shooting but it can become dangerously overcrowded. I've been amazed at how rude some people can be in that area as well. Taking up way more space than they need to carry out their activities. By and large I usually only encounter safe, friendly shooters up there.
My rule with Sylvester is always take out more than you came in with!
 
Your lucky your in BC and you can just go into the bush and target shoot when you want.

Im in New Brunswick and for me to go into the bush and target practice is a big no no. To possess or transport a firearm in the bush (resort of wildlife) is an offence under the Fish and Wildlife act unless its hunting season and you have a hunting licence.......Its because we're all poachers!!!!
 
I used to go left at that first fork in the road while dirtbiking or four wheeling to get down to stave lake. there are lots of good trails down there to putt around in. After seeing numerous groups of people shooting directley towards those trails I don't go down there anymore. Seriously, how stupid can you get? Once in a while I go shooting at that pit by little Iraq. Its alot nicer then it used to be. Thanks to the 4x4 clean up crews. The place looked worse then a landfill before.
 
There are a few ways to get down to the same part of the lake that don't require driving through the valley of death. I personally think you guys worry too much. I don't wanna get shot, nor do I shoot at either of those places because I have a secret spot that unfortunately has finally been found by other shooters recently. But I drive through down that road almost every weekend without even the slightest worry of being hit accidentally. However I often wonder if anyone up there is thinking of taking a shot at us on purpose but that can happen anywhere, even in your own house so what are the options? I say ef it, when it's my time it's my time. Till then just giver.

I rather go down knowing i shot back at an intruder and saved my loved ones and probably become somewhat as hero that changed the laws that gives us law abiding citizens the right to protect our castle...than a stray bullet as i am taking a piss in a bush down by the river......each to there own i guess.:)
 
One other note that I thought I'd bring up:

The shell casings/hulls and garbage are really ridiculous up there, but what really makes me mad is stuff like oil jugs, paint cans, car batteries, and old air conditioners used for target practice. If Abbotsford ever does get the go ahead for a water treatment plant (Stave would be the source of the water), I'd be willing to bet that will be the end of Sylvester Road being open for shooting (Possibly all public access) due to that type of pollution being introduced into the watershed. Sad but in environmentally sensitive times we live in, it is a real possibility. If you don't believe me try going for a hike around any of the other water sheds and see what happens.

Yes it is absolutely disfukinscusting up there. The people that leave all that crap are the same efing fuktards that complain about losing places to shoot/camp/wheel and getting hassled. I'd love to see someone dumping a load of garbage and be able to put a couple holes in thier engine block. Go ahead and call that one in, peasant....
 
I used to live in Mission until 11 years ago, used to go to Stave and Davis all the time, sounds like that area has pretty much nose dived off that big cliff to the east of Davis. Sad to hear, never saw garbage like the manner you fellow gun enthusiast's are describing, darn it all.

I'm thinking the next time I come over that way for a visit I'll have to take a trip up to my old stomping grounds Twin lakes, Terapoki ck and beyond, etc..

I thought Abby got it's water from Paradise creek to east of Dewdny Mtn?

Boy I'm glad I moved to the wild wet coast at least here I can surf, couldn't do that over there, well maybe still surfing during a freshet with rope tied to Suicide creek bridge, but that would never compare to a glassy 8 - 10 foot left barrel at a spectacular beach on the Ocean, ya I'm rubbing it in a little, in good fun that is.

However, we too have idiots that somehow earned a PAL and think that a pallet stood up by a stick to staple their target on to is a sufficient back stop for their bullets, wish I had the power to yank their license and take their firearms for being that dumb, but not too many, just a few, still bothers me though.

I was dirtbiking about a month ago and I thought it looked different. I grew up dirtbiking, fishing, camping in there, and it's gross.

The average outdoor person using the back country isn't a " safety Sally" but the bad apples are turning them into "antis".

These yahoos are already gun nutz, they took the course and were approved for a licence. How do we finish their education? The guys at CRR had us print fliers and put them up all over. What about something like that? Might be told off a bunch but some guys might appreciate a bit of guidance.

Ever been to the other side of Stave lake?
