Synthetic Motor Oil as a Gun Oil

Next time your wife or GF drags you into Bed Bath and Beyond or some similar box store, look for the Travel Sized plastic squeeze bottles. I give them out at my CQB clinics. Then like many of you said, drain whatever oil jug or container into the squeeze bottle and PAY IT FORWARD to newbies at the gun club.

Good KARMA also....what’s not to like?

ANY oil is better than NO oil....

Cheers, Barney

Awesome idea!!! I'm sure will be dragged thru one of those stores soon!! Maybe buying few little sample bottles and paying it forward at the range will make it more enjoyable of a trip

I use Air Tool Oil or any real Light Oil for off season storage, but for in the field I always carry a spray can of Gun Oil because of how convenient an aerosol can is to use.

I've used 5w20 synthetic on guns for years because that's what my car uses. There's always a half empty container around!

Reminds me of something an elderly retired mechanic told me at the shop a while ago. He said he’s never seen anything fail because of having the wrong oil in it. Without oil? Yes.

Try putting atf in a hydraulic clutch master cylinder.

I too don't get the jest of auto lewbs for gun use.
Life's too short to pizz around with auto oils for firearms.

I have made my own recipe for a gun lube. I have been using it for a while and it works great! No problems operating in -30C or colder (never used it colder than -30 C). It is a variant of Ed's red but I modified it to be essentially all synthetic and to just be a lube and not a cleaner.

Here is the recipe:
- Mobil 1 synthetic 0W-40 (1 cup)
- Fully synthetic ATF ( I use Amsoil) (1 cup)
- Zinc Hyper Lube additive (1/8 cup)
- Kroil (1/8 cup)
- 3 in 1 oil (up to 1/8 cup)

For a rust preventer I mist the above product on a large microfiber towel (they sell them for wiping your car) and then mist a high quality silicon (i.e. 3 in 1 silicon lubricant spray)on the towel as well. Then wipe your firearm with it then if you want use a clean microfiber cloth to wipe it off. Works great! Then store the cloth in a large zip lock bag. This will last you for years.

+1 for ATF, I had a litre left over from my leaky Buick and it'll keep me going for years. Don't like the smell? add some perfume or essential oil to it, mine smells like cinnamon!

Motor oil is likely too thick unless you get 0W or something. Regardless I agree with the others who don't want to smell engine or ATF oils. I've been using break-free CLP for years and if it's good enough for machine guns and the military it's good enough for me.

Haha. I worked for a certain long haul trucking company about 20 years ago where we had a driver fill the windshield washer tank with engine oil. Figured he needed to make his wipers last longer I guess? Ended up replacing the whole washer system. LOL

Used plenty of G96, M-Pro7, Slip2000, CLP, 3-1, Mobil1, and lately Royal Purple.
None of my guns know the difference between them and continue to work just fine...

Ive used regular motor oil, synthetic oil, ATF, and a few others over the years. None of my guns know the difference. All are rust free and working well.

Just what ya want the smell of ATF when hunting LOL

It wont make a difference most times. I once spilled diesel fuel down my pant leg and boots, and had two deer come within ten yards of me. I had a headache from the smell, but it didn't bother the deer at all.
