Civil war sucks, and if one side is unarmed, it really sucks for them. Assad and his father are muderous despots, with decades of blood on their hands and deserve a bungie jump into a volcano. In other words, they fit right in with the other leaders in the middle east, south and central america, and asia. Everyone else is caught in the middle of the ugliest side of humanity, with both sides having their share of "rock star psychopaths" and propaghanda manipulators.

They may not like those WWII and cold war arms but one thing about them, they are untraceable. Try to prove where those weapons came from.

Another thing, the people they are issued to will require a bit more extensive training than they need to operate an AK.

One more thing, you can guarantee that every time they cause a Federal soldier to drop his weapon, they will pick up that weapon and pass on their old relic to the next fellow in line.

When the Russians sent their troops into Stalingrad, one in five were issued rifles and the rest were issued 20 rounds of ammo. Common belief is that they were short of rifles. It's been said that the Russians had crunched the numbers and figured out that only one in five troops got the opportunity to fire their weapons, before they were killed or the weapon lost. They didn't want to waste valuable resources. Lots of men etc.

Sounds like a decision Stalin (confirmed Sociopath) and his similar minded generals would make.

Those rifles are treasures in the right hands.

They may not be ###y but they will get them the arms they are after by attrition.

French military weapons since Napoleon have followed a most unusual pattern: finest materials, best workmanship....... and wonky designs.

Get over the wonky designs (which is quite possible) and they work very, very well.

Little MAS-38 is one of the most intriguing SMG designs ever.

The much maligned Chauchat was so far ahead of its time in some ways that the people making it and the people using it did not understand what they were playing with. The result, of course, was chaos.

I've always admired the French predilection to mark their martial arms with script, like so:

Same script on the rifles, too.

I wish they still did that, but I suppose such things went away after the horror of the trenches. Damn shame. Such small things really "class things up".

Unfortunately, should the opposition take power they will be no different than the ones they replaced. Better things are one sided, over in a short time to limit deaths and suffering and then pressurize the regime to slowly give more freedom to the people. If it is given too quickly new tyrants will spring up. A culture of freedom and the expectation of the same must be permitted to grow and this is a slow process. A revolution will do nothing except change one tyrant for another.

I completely agree, but once blood is spilled, the ball gets rolling. I giggle at the naive idea that democracy you be exported everywhere, and it will work. There are enormous cultural changes that must take place before you can remove any of these despots, including Saddam, Mubarak, Ghadaffi, Assad, or the house of Saud, and not see a total collapse into age old tribal and religious conflict. In all these parts of the world, (and lets include Yemen, Iran, Turkey, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Chechnya, heck, all the _____stans) iron fisted despots are the only thing holding opposing teams apart. Once that order (even an unjust, cruel order) is removed, choas reigns. Saddam has been gone for years, and now the US forces are gone, how is life in Iraq? Sh!t. Loads of violence, with no end in sight. Corrupt officials with old grudges to settle.

The US solution is dangerously ignorant of the deep cultural and religious divisions these countries hold. They feel that any change is good, if a hostile leader is overthrown. "We'll just seed a little chaos, mix in some weapons, and a great big democracy tree will grow. Then, when the time is right, delicious freedom fruit will fall from those trees, straight into the baskets of strategically placed US companies!"

Brilliant. How's it working out so far?

Well, at least the French guns will get to be fired now.

Another cheap shot. One tires of that sort of thing.

Anyone who so casually slanders the French military must not know a hell of a lot about history. Napoleon took the French army to the edge of dominating Europe. The French contribution to the western front in WW1 was huge, and unbelievably bloody. People who throw around "For sale - French army rifle etc." gags should spend some time reading about the losses they suffered and the skill and bravery with which they fought.

If reading isn't something they do well, perhaps they could gather together some beer money and fly to France. While there, an ignoramus might visit this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Douaumont_ossuary

While there, they might learn that France lost nearly 1.4 million troops during WW1. That's more than anyone else, except Russia.

One would hope that learning a few facts and seeing the bones of an entire generation of French men might give one a little insight. With that insight, they might stop parroting the idiotic slurs that came out of our American cousins after 9/11.

One hopes. But life is full of disappointments.

oh I know French history I know history well but some times you need to joke about things eh

1.4 French kia. Germans lost slightly over 2. However the Germans fought Europe, Britain and the two north american nations.
Astounds me why people make fun of the French Army. Modern post WW2 is one thing but they are more than able to kick ass if the political leash is removed. Then, watch out.
