T/C contender carbine barrel question

Well I bought a T/C Contender Carbine in 30-30 sight unseen for my kids for Christmas thinking it with be an ideal 'light' rifle....It got here today and SURPRISE it has a 23 inch heavy contour barrel....its bloody heavy....
looking at overal length issues and such it would appear I can put a 14 inch factory barrel on it and still get a legal overal length.....but will they fit is my question....any contender experts out there that can help me out???

I have a contender carbine with the regular weight/size 30/30 23 inch brl........weighs about 6 pounds..
also in .223 ss........357 maximum blued brl.......

also have a contender pistol with several 10 to 14 inch bull barrels ......all barrels will fit on rifle and vice versa....

The actions are the generation 2 (G2) type with the hammer/fireing pin set up to switch from center to rimfire mode by moving the small lever........the 1st generation T/C required a small slot screw driver to switch modes.........

I had one of the G1' s long time ago and sold it......but all barrels interchanged too even with the more recently purchased....

I believe there was a third frame made with armaloy? (sp) coating that had issues with interchangeabilities but have never seen one of these frames..


......I have no idea if you can legally hunt with a 14 inch brl on your carbine frame.......I do have an acquaintance that has a T/C carbine in 45/70 "legally registered as a rifle" with 16 inch brl. that he hunts with.....

Just get any shorter factory barrel but not so short overall length is less than 26 inches, and reregister with new barrel length and caliber change if there is one. I hunt with an Encore with a 15in. .308 barrel, reregistered as such.

I'm guessing you wouldn't have any trouble selling off the longer barrel if you wanted to keep expenses down.
 
The only barrels that will not fit are the Armaloy ones all others including the new G2 frame ones will fit your rifle.

Sorry to hear about the length/weight of your 30-30 barrel.

About 10 years ago I bought my son a s/s T/C Contender carbine in 30-30 and when he started to get older I sent the barrel down to Mike Bellm in the States and he rechambered it to a wildcat 308 Bellm which is a cartridge of his own design that uses 444 Marlin brass necked down with standard 308 Win dies and loaded to 300 Savage velocities eg; 150gr @ 2650fps.

We now have 3 additional barrels, a 18.5" 10mm, 16.5" 22lr match chamber and a 22" 45-70. I am also interested in gettting a 223 barrel for it so if hs4570 is interested I'd take it off his hands if the price is right and he is willing to part with it... :)

This is an excellent fun gun that my son grew up on and now that he is 22 years old I have a new son that is due to be born March 22/07 that will be learning how to shoot on the same rifle.

One last thing the velocity loss of a 30-30 in a 14" barrel compared to a 21" to 23" is going to quite a bit so I personally wouldn't be interested in that kind of a set up for a young fellow to learn hunting on.
 
A 14" .223 barrel that I was just itching to get for my Contender carbine required drilling of a new hole in the fore-end to align with the barrel studs. What gives here? My Contender is a G2 model. Are they different?

Are you refering to the studs that attach the fore end to the barrel?

If so I believe a pistol fore end is different than a carbine fore end so you may have to get the smaller pistol fore end to make it work.
 
Pistol brls. require a different forend from carbine brls....and I even have a third forearm required to accomodate an old hexagon brl in .22 rimfire..

T/C forends are easy to make if you are handy with tools and wood or have a friend that is.......

hs45/70...........your mileage may vary

Thanks guys, I probably should have looked into it further before drilling/butchering my current fore-end.
