how many of you do frequent barrel/caliber swaps with your Pro Hunter?

watching some video's, it looks pretty easy to do, but I'm wondering about the wear and tear of punching the pin in/out all the time.

I know of oversize pins being available, but how soon will that become insufficient? what do you do when you have a loose hinge? get one machined to spec by a local metal shop?

new pins .fire pins and spring upgrades contact MIKE BELLM he is the T/C upgrader .he ships to Canada ..also you don't have to hammer out the pin to change barrels ..i also bought the oversize pin but there is no need for it ..
 
thanks guys. watched some videos and Haus of Firearms seems to think a loose pin will shift your PoA, which in theory makes sense. does it actually get loose with use is the question... :rolleyes:
 
both my encore frames have a locking pin, pin has a shoulder at both ends, one end is cut in half with a set screw in the middle that when screwed in locks the pin in place. can't remember if it was made by T/C as an accessory or by another company. I've had them for years and really no poi change for hunting distances that I've ever noticed when changing barrels. I did have to sand a little area under the wings of the forearm that covers the pin so they don't rub or cause pressure on either side. they work great

I have never had a problem with loose pins or shifting POI

Admittedly I haven't swapper barrels that many times maybe 10 times on the 2 actions I own I have 204, 308.7mm mag, 300 win mag, a short barrel 45-70 and a 50ml. I have never had POI shifting problems. I was amazed at how accurate the 50ml is as everything I was reading sid they were useless past 100 yards but that's not my experience
 
I've owned everything from 22lr to 45/70 and about 20 calibers in between. Never had an issue. I use a locking pin everything is tight. I've sen one pro hunter where someone beat the heck out of the pin around with something and it was slightly loose.
 
how is the pin with high pressure loads?

I've read about how the No. 1 is good for high pressure loads, but how the Pro Hunter can get beaten up with just larger cartridges that are available for it

I owned a frame that exclusively saw 375H&H and 45-70. No issues with hinge pins or excessive wear on anything other than shoulders.
 
I always check point of aim when I switch barrels on my Contenders and Prohunters they are never properly zeroed after swapping = close enough to hunt with but maybe 1/2" - 1" off.

I've been thinking of buying a torque wrench to always torque the fore end screws the same just to see if that improves point of aim retention.

Been there, done that and really not worth the effort.
 
Thank you for the heads up = I'll save myself the $100 it would cost me for that torque wrench.

I shot my biggest antlered mule deer buck using a T/C Contender carbine chambered in a wildcat called 308Bellm (444 Marlin brass necked down with 308 Win dies) loaded with 150gr Rem Cor-Lok bullets @ 2620fps = I had a 223 barrel installed hunting coyotes when just before dark I spotted at 700 yards on the far side of a huge logging cut a doe got the bino's on her and spotted the buck up the hill from her appr 50 yards.

It was way to dark to try and get close so I headed to my hotel swapped barrels over to my 21" 308Bellm headed back in the morning after sneaking back into the cut I spotted the buck 210 yards from me in the opposite end of the cut took the shot it made it max 30 yards.

Later that morning I took a second shot just to check point of aim I was off appr 3/4" good enough for the distance I shot the buck at but not up to my standards of retaining zero = if I have time I always check zero after swapping barrels.

I always head up to the shop to check zero with a couple of rounds after I swap barrels. They are usually very close but I think I got perfect zero only once and that was with my Encore PH.

We use torque wrench on forearms. We us TC pro hunters equipped with a MGM/Brux smokeless .458 ML barrel. Recoil is a bit stout but that’s expected when shooting a 300 grain sabot less pill at 2500+ fps.

Poi changes and groups tighten to half MOA.

My two cents, your mileage may vary!
 
I have also heard that you must use a torque wrench when changing barrels or your POI can change. I have not experienced it myself though because I have not been changing barrels lately. I believe I will use a torque wrench though when I do, it can’t make things worse.
