So I'm looking at ordering myself an IBI barrel for my T1x, but after discussion with Jerry at Mystic Precision I was informed that he does not do installs. As such, I find myself looking for a reputable smith who can do the swap for me as I do not have the tooling to do it myself as it is my understanding that some installs require barrel shims due to variances in T1x receivers, and I don't want messed up headspace issues.

Any suggestions for a good smith who would do this for less than a kidney? I do not want to mess around with quality of work, so I'll ship anywhere really, provided I can get the rifle back in a reasonable amount of time.

Thanks for any help.

Does IBI do installs? Interested to see your results after the swap as I have a T1X also.

Some T1X owners have changed the barrels themselves.

Send me an email... we can get the barrel installed for you. I don't do it but it can be installed.

It is just the cost of shipping rifles back and forth across the country. It will need to be insured and it is oversized so...

finding a local smith would save you some serious coin but if you are ok to ship, then let's get it done for you.

I went through this whole process just 2 weeks ago. Deal directly through Jerry and he will set everything up with IBI. I was lucky I live only 20 minutes from IBI and Jerry set it up so I could just go in. Awesome crew at IBI but definitely recommend having them or a Smith do the install. Even the tech at IBI had a hell of a time removing the factory barrel and hes done many. Lots of heat and 3 broken torx bits later tho he had it off and the new one installed. Accuracy gains where well worth it, the factory barrel shot amazing but the IBI hands down is more accurate. I have about 1500 rounds down range now and it's really starting to shine.

Went with a 20" .900 bull

I'm Paul_T as well over at Snipers in the threads posted above.

Was going to buy direct from IBI but wound up ordering through Jerry @ Mystic as he has always given me great service (and he's an hour and a half drive from me).

Removed and installed the barrel myself. Factory removal for me was not as difficult as some people have had.
Stoeger Canada checked with Tikka for me and they said they set the barrels into the receiver with an epoxy (adhesive beading compound was the wording they used), then tighten the 3 grub screws.
Heat is your friend (according to Ryan at IBI) although in my case I didn't have to heat anything up or beat the barrel out. Grub screws were tight, but popped loose when I applied some torque.

For install I originally headspaced with instructions from Ryan at IBI using a round that I would be shooting (he commented that some are re-headspacing their rifles whenever they change ammo manufacturer/type).
Initial headspace was just on the excessive side and I was getting misfires.

Borrowed a Go-NoGo-Field set from my LGS (awesome of him to let me borrow tools...) and reset with 0.043 Go snug. NoGo would not close and Field of course was no way in the world going to close.

The Eley EPS chamber is tight..... the barrel is accurate. Have tried SK Std+ to 100 yards and bought a couple of bricks of Lapua Centre-X that I will be using (testing in spring).

Can you do the removal and install yourself?
Yes, but if you are not comfortable possibly breaking bits or having to heat up your barrel/receiver and then headspacing the barrel correctly then I would suggest a gunsmith.
Excessive headspace can lead to (at minimum) misfires or (worse) case separation.

As far as shimming goes, Kisssofdeath at Snipers used shim stock around the IBI barrel as there may be a bit of play in the barrel/receiver area due to manufacturing differences in the receiver.
I also had some play but decided to try it without shims first.

As you see up to 100 yds at least I see no reason to shim the barrel. Once I take it out further with even better ammo if I see that the groups are not what they should be I will consider it. Not a big deal, I have loads of different thickness shim stock in my garage.

Easy way to remove your barrel. Drill a 15/16” hole in a 1/4” thick piece of aluminum slide it over your barrel to the face of your action. Remove your bolt. Loosen the three set screws. Insert a brass punch in your bolt raceway and put in the hydrolic press.

When installing the new barrel use a few drops of Loctite 641 retaining compound.
