New T1x just arrived. 22lr 20”barrel. Application will be close range hunting. Grouse and rabbits mostly. Will use it for plinking but no long range desire. Inside 100 yards. Might swap the stock for an mdt down the road.

Not sure which way to go for optics honestly. Fixed or variable? FFP? I have been looking at AR scopes. Something like vx3 1.5-5 or some 1-6 power. What’s 6 power like at 100yards? $600 budget

Thoughts?

The answer is, as always: a good and light 3-9 or some old guys will say a fixed 4-6x but those are rarer. Id spring for a Bushnell Banner II Rimfire or the Leupold freedom Rimfire with LR ret if you have 4x as much to spend.

This is 6x at 97y. The circle target lower right is 1.25" diameter with a 3/8 center dot. I reckon a squirrels head is bigger than that.

I shot 10rd groups on 6,12,18,24 power that day and my 6/24 were the same size. Magnification != precision and I'd argue the width of the cross hairs is almost more important (can't hit what you can't see)

I think that two things you should consider is an adjustability for parallax and a reticle with usable hold-over/hold-under/hold-to-the-side markings.

Anything will do, of course, but if you'd like to have the the ability to hit a grouse's head anywhere from 20' to 100 yards, I think you'll appreciate both of those features.

I have the Leupold freedom 3-9 with the rimfire reticle and so far quite like it. I use the 22 for grouse and squirrel mostly and it works well. Sighted in at 50, then you can use the hash marks at 75 and 100 yards once you figure out the drop on your favourite hunting load.

Thanks for the quick reply guys. Thank you for the picture, definitely puts the magnification into perspective.

Few recommendations for the leupold vx freedom 3-9x40 rimfire moa. Will look into that scope some more.

Cannot find any reticles with hold-under markings though.

Any markings over the main crosshairs are hold under.
The scope in post#2 has them.

I also put a leupold freedom 3-9 on mine. I put the AR version with a TMR reticle and mil dial though. Pretty sure they don’t make that particular version anymore. I wanted to set this up as a sort of trainer for my t3x with a mark5hd and similar TMR reticle. The leupold freedom line is decent for the money

Pretty sure it ONLY comes with the MOA reticle....

Depends on your price point....

Leupold VX Freedom is very nice but if you don't want to spend $500 have a look at Athlon NEOS 3-9x40 with the BDC22 reticle. Fixed parallax (100yd)

The NEOS above is $185CAD plus tax

I've not looked at the NEOS glass but I have 3 other higher end Athlons that are very good for the price point.

When out hunting are you mostly at 10 power?

Cabellas has a sale on a 3-9x40 Diamondback for $250.
That’s the one I’m putting on mine 1”tube btw

I have one of those on a t3 which gets a lot of use. I had a larger budget in mind since I was thinking about retrofitting an AR scope on this but popular opinion has swayed me back to the 3-9. Might go to lgs and look through a few of those 1-6

EDIT. Indicated budget in first post.

The Vortex Diamondback HP 4-16 X 42 is what's on my T1x. It has the BDC hold over reticle. A 50 yd zero means the lowest set of crosshairs is pretty much dead on at 100 yds, using standard velocity ammo.
Side focus goes down to just under 30 yds, at anything less than 16X the image is clear on closer targets.
Very good glass for the price. I find there's quite a difference between the Diamondback and the Diamondback HP.

...Has anyone used the leupold 2-7x33 rimfire?

Yep, and it's a solid option for that spec.

Truth is, they're mostly all good options, depending on your preferences and what you're using them for. You say grouse and rabbit, so I assume that means you're on the move, and you'll be going for headshots only, (correct me if I am wrong). What kind of terrain and vegetation?

The 2-7 Leupold is probably one of the best balanced options for a 22 hunting rifle. I'd skip any parallax adjustable scope like the plague for a hunting gun, but that's just me.

If you ever see the Weaver classic rimfire scopes on the used market, they are in my mind an amazing 22 scope for the money. I prefer them to the Leupolds I've had, very sharp edge to edge, and heavier reticle then the leupy
