T81 furniture removal help

My grip screw basically sheared on both sides of the slot, and yes I used the correct driver and technique. So I just drilled off the rest of the head and replaced it with a proper Allan head screw after refinishing the wood. It took an unbelievable amount of torque to remove the T nut from the grip screw once I had it out of the receiver, no way a flat head driver would have moved mine.

Just had to tap the forend wood down once the screw an rod were removed.

Sounds like some have a lot more thread lock than others. The screws on mine were tight but broke free without too much force.

Some thread locker requires heat to let go. But if there is thread locker, you would see residue in the threads after. It would be obvious.

if so, some heat applied to the end through the top of the receiver with a soldering iron might have helped.

100%, unfortunately I had no idea it was as others have removed the grip no issues. I also had no idea how it was attached, via a long screw and bushing. I usually only collect 1950s or older... live and learn. Good news was no issues or damage to wood. Just gotta source or make screws as the bushing is fine.

If you know the length and thread pitch, it's just a regular metric screw. A fastener place will have a suitable replacement.

My grip was wobbling so I figured I'd take it off, see if there was a problem, then try putting it back on.

Any tips for re-inserting the the screw more easily? Just doing it by hand, I'm stopped after 720 degrees rotation. What will it take to make this go smooth so nothing breaks in the process?

Inserting the screw from the top of the bushing, the incorrect way, gets me twice as far before facing that same level of resistance. Again, this is just by hand, but this is probably close to the point where a screwdriver could fail me as well.

So it's the bushing that's making this difficult.

Went ahead and took a shot at reattaching the grip. Job done as far as I can tell. Grip no longer wobbles.

Screw is partially stripped, probably won't survive another removal+reattachment attempt.

Can anyone comment on this top-down look into the receiver on how much further the screw should be in, if at all?

I drilled mine out so the shaft of the screw is still attached as it was from the factory to the bushing and it’s 100% flush to it. Not looking forward to removing it. I’ll throw it in the oven I use to cure paint to loosen up the thread lock before hand, should help. I suggest you use some heat as well as the threads are problematic with the residue in them still

As part of me suspected, this photo from the Owner's thread makes it clear that I didn't get the screw as far in as it should be. Mine is about 1-2 threads/rotations short of coming through the top. So maybe ~ 70% of the way through? Not sure how much of a concern this is in the long run.

As long as it is tight you should be fine.

It is an M5 x 0.8 that is 90 or 95mm long SHCS. I actually cut the top end off of the headless factory grip screw and welded a shorter SHCS on to save a trip to town.

Any pics of a quad rail installed yet. How do you guys like it?

Check the other T81 threads, I got a few pics posted. Type 81 owners thread and the do you have your type 81 thread. Even posted a pic of my rifle with my M1A2 grenade and adapter on the grenade launcher, it fits nice but just isn't long enough to engage the retainer.

The rail seems very solid and should work fine. I'm gonna test with a variety of red dots and maybe a scout scope to see if it can tighten groups over the iron sights. Still waiting on some parts to finish the rifle the way I want but having fun trying stuff on the rail for fun though.

I’m having a hell of a time trying to get the front guard and pistol grip off ? Nothing is working and the cheap soft metal screws are now mangled :/ anyone have any issues ?? Or tips :)

Wow, another one bites the dust.... I saw a you tube video where a guy took the sleeve off the end of his barrel, and bubbed his rear sight....
