Has anyone knowledgeable in firearms design looked at what a T97 would do in an over pressure reload situation or an out of battery ignition?

AR and M14s do blow up on occasion. I'm sure as a mechanical device at one point a T97 will experience a failure.
 
With the pictures surfacing of bullet set back in the casings, I imagine it is just a matter of time before one actually feeds all the way into the chamber, wonder what will happen once the trigger is pulled...
 
I've taken apart my T97 plenty of times. What exactly are you saying is there?

Edit: I took it apart again and see what what you're talking about. It doesn't exactly provide a lot of coverage, but it's better than a kick in the junk.

There is a bit of steel on the left of the chamber.

Would likely deflect gasses from a double charge.

However, an out of battery detonation would likely not be fun (as is the case in any firearm).

Seriously though, with the mag issues it supposedly has with certain mag brands, something could potentially go wrong at some point. I'm just not sure that the typical reported problem so far would cause a major failure; a casing with a bullet tip + powder inside of it would probably not cause much of an explosion at all. Smokeless powder needs pressure to "explode" and, since the bullet tip is inside the casing and doesn't "seal" the cartridge anymore, the probable result would be a relatively slow burn with a lot of smoke coming out of the pipe.

That's the theory... and that being said, I'm wouldn't be too enthusiastic about putting it to practice to see what really happens!

Oh another note, I was worried about what prevents the t97 from firing out of battery, and it seems like the striker cannot physically hit the firign pin unless the bolt is at least 8/10 into battery or even 10/10 into battery

take yours apart and you'll see
 
also in the event of a chamber explosion, it looks like the gases are meant to be vented down that hole right under the chamber at the where locking lugs rotate (if you look forward of the mag well you can see it)
 
Gasses should be vented downwards mainly, small steel insert in upper receiver cover should serve to direct a good portion of explosive gasses away from shooters face.
 
Thanks guys, I agree.

Was shooting it for the first time this weekend and had a Norc 95 round fire normally but lots of smoke (and stink) came from the ejection port and inside the plastic upper on the receiver.

Rifle is fine and I suspect a pierced primer.

A buddy was shooting the same ammo and saw one round do that in an AR.
