Guys I fixed the problem with my type 97 and pmag gen2 in a minute. Take your pmag and slightly grind /file /scrape down the thickness of the rib on the back of the magazine. No need to go down all the way, just before the rivet is plenty. The magazine should hold up 100%,the gen 3 magazines took away meat from there anyways AND it's not one of ANY of the common fatigue failure points on the magazines.

To be exact, with magazine facing in line with you looking at the back of it(looking at the primers of cartridges in the mag), it is the rib facing you where the hold open rides in. If you were to pinch the rib, it would be what you grind (not the back surface).

I'd rather do the mags that don't fit.

Most feeding issues are from mags that are too loose. Filing the gun increases the chances of that.

Its because people are obsessed with filing it until the mags drop free. You only file the magwell until the mag can go in and come out without a struggle, and everything'll work fine.

The problem is that the magazine well is too narrow for the spine of many magazines. So you need to widen the well or narrow the magazine spine.

Exactly. It’s a 15 minute job on the rifle. Go slow, test mag(s) often for fit as you go. Zero problems.

So the magwell is not designed around the STANAG spec.... Got it.

I think it is supposed to be but was probably built by a 14 year old in China and Norinco QC is not exactly top tier.

I would find a brand and generation of magazine that works properly and buy 20 of them just for this rifle.

As Shawn says, modifying the rifle may make one fit but then the others may be too loose. Grinding your rifle should always be a last resort. Not that the magwell is load bearing but surface treatments (hardening) only go thousandths of an inch and after that it's just soft aluminum that will wear and get looser the more you use it.
